REVIEW: Splatoon 2 (Nintendo Switch)

Splatoon 2 literally punches you in the face with colour, and says notice me. It had me interested, dare I say drawn to it like a moth to a flame on the shelves. What does it have to offer in a world saturated with shooters and platformers that others haven’t already provided? An innocence and fun only Nintendo can supply.

Splatoon 2 developed by Nintendo is a sequel designed for the Nintendo Switch. Hot on the heels of its previous title Splatoon, this game is a third person, team based, shooter and platformer.

I suggest starting with the single player hero mode, which is basically a short but energetic and action packed campaign. For those new to the series, you control your customisable avatar in Inkopolis, a city thriving with fellow human-squidy hybrids (who might I add could not be cuter) called ‘Inklings’. This time round, Marie, the local celebrity and undercover agent, recruits and dubs you a valuable ally. She guides you through your battles along the way supply weapons and tips, to recover the stolen Zapfish, the main supply of energy to the city, from the dastardly eight legged villains ‘The Octarians’.
As you begin your adventure, you'll platform through different worlds, defeating each one’s boss. The mechanics in this game are very similar to the original, using a range of hella fun, coloured ink as your weapon of choice to cover surfaces, solve terrain puzzles and to defeat enemies. Turning into your more squidier self will refill your ink tank so you can power on. Unlocking each of the different guns and having them suited to particular areas of the course is a genius way to become accustomed to them, prepare yourself and utilise them in the multiplayer modes.

This acid punk metropolis is filled with ocean filled motifs, references and puns, and exciting obstacles. It just feels so grungy and hip, it's every scene kids dream, even down to the flakes of glimmer in the vivid war paint. Genius environmental level designs, keep each stage exciting and fresh. Using things such as bouncy castle flooring, rail grinding and grappling to traverse and platform. Each is thriving with character, neon in colour, a psychedelic trip to a marine fantasy world. The music and sound effects are amazing at setting the ambience, even with the intro songs to boss battles pumping me up and intimidating me at the same time.

The hipster hub as we dubbed it, is the graffiti splashed centre of everything. This is where you access each mode, the shops, arcades and can mildly interact (read their stats) with other online players. Most of you will spend time in the shops buying gear and weapons with particular perks, such as faster ink refills, or movement speed for example, to full customise your play style.

Once you have tackled hero mode, multiplayer is definitely now your home, and geez it is an interesting household. Regular Battles are a turf war of inking the most territory. It is exciting each time, with having me often checking the map for how much coverage my team has. It's gutting when you don’t and it’s so visually gratifying when you do. Whether it be dominance flip flopping or total annihilation with a clued on squad, each match is so different and ridiculously fun. I’m still not bored of it.

Connecting to the game for me was quick and easy, my only gripes with the lobbies was the fact that if something came up and you wanted to back out of the lobby you couldn’t till after the next match had ended. This left me annoyed as often I had games with idle players sitting there as we got overwhelmed and seeing them end on a score of 0 at no fault to themselves. Also it is quite irritating, once you got a flow on to have to back out to change loadouts because you can’t in the lobby. It just ruins the fun, when at times it already can be difficult to get in a game with a friend. It is very hit and miss if you end up in the same teams.

Ranked play is not my cup of tea, so I steered clear but it is basically playing enough to earn a rank competitively. Once you are level ten it is open to you and consists of games of Rainmaker, Splat Zones and Tower Control. Each are objective and strategy based, so plan your moves, weapons and attack points wisely. Once you are ranked, hit League Play with a fellow squid squad of pros to truly show your skills sets.

Now surprisingly, Salmon Run available from the hub is another mode that I thoroughly enjoyed. Play alone or with three friends, your mission is to hold off wave after wave of fishy foes, battling seven types of bosses, as you collect, transport and bank their precious pearls. Boy, were these bosses memorable, probably some of the best visual characters. With their clunky rusty armours, slinky aquatic designs, and unspoken charisma, each were so uniquely different and more challenging than the Hero Mode bosses. When these and their minions swarm it can be overwhelming fun, with your team having to work to survive, picking each other up, but once you clear them the sense of achievement is huge. More than anywhere else in the game.

Voice Chat mode can only be done via the Nintendo App, a very pigeon holed move. The app is rubbish anyway, with very little chat going on with all the constant interruptions and issues. Nearly everything a functional phone does, phone calls, connection and even notifications, make the voice chat drop out. I think it should have nothing to do with Splatoon itself but the Switch in general and such a poor business choice shall not reflect in the actual game score itself.

In a world filled with shooters trying to take the top spot, this team based, third person, gun slinger is certainly an enjoyable stand out I recommend for anyone with a Switch. It has stand out characters and environments, exciting gameplay and mechanics, and is definitely hours of fun. I just can’t put it down, now I just wish my Switch battery lasted longer, but that’s a whole new article.....
