REVIEW: Crossing Souls (Playstation 4)

Born in the 80’s, growing up I really learnt to love all things 80’s from the music and just the style of that time. When I found out Crossing Souls was set in the 80’s I wondered if it was possible to pull it off and it sure did.

Crossing Souls takes place in the year 1986, which is a great year if you ask me. The story follows two brothers, Chris, Kevin and three of their friends, Matt, Big Joe and their female companion Charlie who live in a small town in California USA. Crossing Souls begins in Chris and Kevin's bedroom, Kevin has something to tell everyone but wants to share the news in their treehouse, so Chris gathers everyone up and they all meet in the treehouse where Kevin shares what he’s found which will change all their lives forever. Each playable character has their own abilities, including being able to jump, climb and being able to move heavy things. The story involves you walking around the town, going into buildings, some that don’t offer much others being story related.

This is a single player, action adventure game but what inspired such a game? Well, the creators have shared that both Goonies and E.T. was the inspiration of their 80’s themed game, so if your a fan of Stranger Things you’ll love this game. This is an open world game, though there are moments where you cannot access everywhere you’d like to. There is no difficulty choice, it's one difficulty only but the overall feel for that across the game was fairly easy, though some fights I felt had me working harder than others.

At the start of the game you play as one character, but as you have the gang together, which occurs early at the start, you can change between them at the tap of a bumper, and later on you can have control of two, but I don’t want to ruin why this is so. Along the way you’ll battle spirits, with a couple of enemies to quite a large number at once. There are boss fights which can become harder as you dive deeper into the game, I found some to be much more difficult than others, some you need to be near perfect and take zero damage. Fallen enemies along with boxes you smash that are scattered around will sometimes drop health hearts that somewhat replenish your health.

There is much to check out too. Observing anything you get close enough to that highlights can be looked at and this can range from things on walls, items laying on the ground and so on. Interacting with most NPC’s is something else you can do, they won't say much though. Now, I want to leave my section of gameplay thoughts with the most handy feature along with the worst. There isn’t an auto save in game, but manual save points are often seen in the form of floppy disks, but what isn’t ever seen in game is a waypoint and it's a 50/50 with knowing where to go. Sometimes you’ll haven’t a clue while other times it's quite obvious, but it would have been great to have a waypoint.

HUD is minimal, and shows your health and stamina bars, along with you and your friends face icons. There are also collectables to be found from old school VHS tapes, cassettes and even cartridges.

Crossing Souls presents a colourful world and is filled with 80’s visuals. Just when you think it couldn’t possibly fit everything from the 80’s in, you're proven wrong. From movie and music posters, to the retro televisions and gaming consoles. The houses even look like the time period. Crossing Souls has 16 bit graphics and it really fits the 80’s theme bringing a ton of nostalgia, They even use that VHS filter, but maybe only the oldies will understand what that is. Conversations aren’t heard, instead shown in caption bubbles on screen. Cut scenes are involved in the story making and there are some killer ones that look like they were plucked right from the 80’s. The game is a top down view. Everything you see screams 80’s, so the music had to be the same, and for the most part, it did sound like 80’s music but not everything fit the part sound wise. There is also course language in some dialogue, you've been warned.

A game that will grab the attention of any 80’s fan out there. Crossing Souls story really drew me in and I loved every minute of it. The concept of the duat stone enabling the power to visit other dimension and being able to see past pets and people really felt like something no other game has ever brought to the table of gaming.
