Yes, I am a fan of Razer. Anyone in the office could tell you, my whole work and streaming set up is decked out in Razer gear. Their gear is so functional, so stylish and so innovative. While they are notoriously respected competitors in the PC gaming community, I was sceptical when their new tournament controller was given to me for review. They get computer hardware so right, they can’t get console pieces on point too, can they?

I’m vain, my gaming equipment needs to be sleek, crisp, good looking and black, always black. Appearance is a big deal to me and to many consumers and boy oh boy does it look good. Being roughly the same size as the Xbox One X controller, but slightly heavier ‘The Wolverine’ has subtle differences to the factory controllers that oddly and noticeably stand out. The black, frosted theme crosses over to most aspects of this device, with even the iconic, Xbox buttons being in my favourite shade with a hip font. The palm grips have a nice texture applied for steady grasping. This is one controller that definitely looks nice in your hands.

One of the first things you may notice is the fact it is regrettably wired in to the console. The Wolverine has a detachable, 3m, braided, micro, USB cable, while this probably isn’t the most desirable technology choice as we all like the freedom of a wireless controller, hear me out. Firstly, it isn’t moulded in, so it is easy to clear away after use and secondly no battery packs, means no batteries dying or waiting to be recharged. Razer think of the little things and something as simple as grooves in the charge cable connector and in the port to keep the charge cable supported and in place, is just so innovative.

Unique to Razer products, I was so pleased to see its famous ‘Chroma Lighting’ included with a light bar running around the Xbox button with their illustrious logo front and centre. These small touches are what makes Razer products next level, they understand the customer. Of course, we, the gamer, want to stand out, so making even the lighting and colours being customisable through the Synapse program enables showing off your personal style and individualism at a click of a mouse.

The controller has 4 extra additional remappable buttons, with 2 smaller bumpers at the top and two distinctively wide paddles on the underside. I loved these the most, I have never really seen a design like that, and they were so well positioned, it was so inventive but functional. Each trigger is also equipped with trigger stops for hair line precision and rapid-fire accuracy, perfect for reaction times in shooters where every second counts.

Speaking of the Synapse program, this is were The Wolverine really shines. Not only does it adjust your aesthetics but more importantly your actual gameplay. It is here that you can employ mapping buttons; assign buttons and triggers to new playstyles to suit your own needs. You can also change your clutch sensitivity, increasing and decreasing sensitivity in the thumb sticks for precision and speed control. Also available is the customisation of the vibration intensity of the rumble motors, thus adjusting your immersion level, it’s all up to you. My favourite thing about Razer is that fact they always make it, all up to your taste.

Working on Windows 10 as well as Xbox, The Wolverine is certainly one controller I could easily add to my rotation of regular controllers, up there with the many custom build ones I have from competitors. While some will be deterred by the fact it is a wired controller, it has so many pioneering features that Razer should be celebrated for. The tailoring the Synapse program itself is a genius piece of software, that elevates your gaming experience with this controller. Looking sleek and contemporary, it will definitely be an eye-catching piece of tech to your collection. Razer plain and simple just get what gamers want.
