REVIEW: The Longest Five Minutes (Nintendo Switch)

The Longest Five Minutes is a game out now for the Nintendo Switch and is published by NIS America. 

This game draws inspiration from the classic era of 8 bit JRPG’s with the whole top view and the random enemy encounters on the map as you are walking around. The most interesting concepts and the first that I’ve encountered in any JRPG is that when you start the game you're immediately at the end boss.

You play as the protagonist with the name of Flash who suddenly has no memory of where he is and why he is fighting, he even has no memory of his friends. This is when the game starts as he begins to remember who he is and how he got there, so essentially you're playing his memory flash backs as he regains this memory, if that makes sense. The game is broken up into chapters, once you complete one you'll be taken back to the boss fight where sometimes you'll have options on what to say or do and that is a segment of your memory restored. One good thing about this game is you can save pretty much anywhere you want instead of having to find save points.

The game itself is an RPG, you go around fight enemies, gain experience, level up acquire weapons and equipment and progress with the story. This one is pretty basic to the RPG’s I’ve played in the past, menu screens aren’t complex with options and when you level up you don’t have to spend points as the game does it for you. When you get new equipment you can just choose to equip better items and it does the rest for you. The hardest thing I’ve found is using healing magic on yourself. Combat is turned based and it’s simple to get a hang off as I found I was just repeatedly pressing the same button for attack and the enemy was dead in the first turn, but as you progress further the enemies become harder, but not by much.

You can only every have 4 characters in your group but occasionally you'll get another character to use for certain quests. The menu system is easy to navigate enough and you can scroll though all your options with ease as everything is well layed out. The controls are easy to use on either the controller or if you have the joy cons attached to the tablet.

The graphic style is reminiscent of the JRPG’s of yester year with everything looking pixelated and the screen only shows the bare essentials. The land that you walk on is pretty boring with only some change of colour as you walk into certain areas. The mountains and trees are done with a very simple shape that they look all the same. This game I found it best played in tablet mode as I found that the graphics appeared crisper then if you play on a TV or monitor. The sound effects are basic too, like stepping noises when you walk through a door and when you are fighting. I found that the music is where this game shines; it has a sort of retro feel to it. The tunes kind of takes me back to my youth, it’s very soothing and relaxing at times to upbeat and happy at times too.

In conclusion, the games pretty short for a JRPG with the game lasting for about 10 hours if you don’t grind out experience and money. But the good thing is, The Longest Five Minutes seems to draw on the old school style really well. The gameplay is easy, but not hard either and the story was easy to grasp and follow. I would of liked to have seen more side missions and more characters that you can have in your party but for what it is, its not bad. Being an old school gamer like myself, it was nice to see that the RPG roots haven’t been forgotten and it’s here for a new generation to enjoy.
