REVIEW: Crossing Souls (Nintendo Switch)

Boy oh boy, was the late 80’s/ early 90’s rad as hell. Call me old, but some of you were really missing out. Classic brightly coloured movie posters, big hair with the stench of hair spray, loudly patterned, poofy clothes and arcades full of our timeless, 16-bit, favourite video games, what wasn’t there to love? We had it all, and ‘Crossing Souls’ has it all too. Drawing on that reminiscence of the past much like the well-received ‘IT’ reboot and the successfully applauded TV show ‘The Stranger Things’, this game pulls you into the past, in this brightly neon, cutely pixelated, 80’s world.

‘Crossing Souls’ released in February of this year developed by Fourattic and the unique, if not obscene publishers Devolver Digital, captures you from the get go. Released for PlayStation 4 and PC, is now months later, oddly available now on the Nintendo Switch. Devolver most famously associated with ‘Hotline Miami’ and ‘Serious Sam’ are know for not being the squeakiest of clean publishers especially after blowing up their showcase at this year’s E3, but Nintendo has been surprisingly shedding their cookie cutter persona as of late, so it was a pleasure to see this retro homage added to their collection.

Opening up in a small suburban area of California, in 1986, you are thrown straight into the action as a bizarre, lightning storm inflicts and changes this once average place. Much like the ‘Loser Squad’ in Stephen King’s classic novel, our Hero Chris, his brother and their gang of uniquely skilled friends are out to solve the mystery of what has hold of their quiet, little town. Playing in third person, like any classic arcade game, you must traverse the streets, interact with the town folk, switching constantly between the 5 characters for platforming and puzzle solving along the way. While this gameplay is fun, for me it became a bit of one note, overused gimmick quickly.

Was it much different on the Nintendo Switch? Not, really. I loved playing this game in handheld mode as the colours were so vivid and being so close to your face you can soak up all the details in this pixelated environment, especially since there are minute throwbacks in nearly every scene. Often, I have found when played in the docked mode on the T.V., the Nintendo Switch will lose frames or graphic quality, however due to the 16-bit style I didn’t really find this the case. There was very little to almost no difference on the big screen to the little screen.

This top down, adventure game has many gorgeous cartoon cutscenes too, which reminded me of lying on the carpet on a weekend before my parents woke up. Everything about this game triggers flashbacks, and I absolutely loved that fact. Very quirky, Devolver- like, the game also dabbles in vulgar and crude references whether is be dialogue or in the background, which will either make your cringe or chuckle under your breath. Either way the dialogue was interesting as it scrolled up in the screen via speech bubbles.

Overall, Crossing Souls is an enjoyable game rich with retro nostalgia of the flamboyant 80’s, however at times gameplay seemed a bit tedious and predictable. While the story will definitely intrigue others, the younger audience probably should avoid the rude dialogue and references. Crossing Souls will definitely make you want to dust off your 8-track player (kids ask your parents), rock that neon scrunchy, and jam out to your favourite 80’s hits. I’m looking at you, Pat Benatar.
