Don’t lose your head!

Graveball is a crazy and fun alternative on the sports genre. Created by Goin’ Yumbo Games and published by 3D Realms. If you do not know who 3D Realms are by now, you are too young. Ha, kidding aside. They are behind several popular titles, more notable Duke Nukem.

This has got to be one of the strangest takes on the Football style genre games out there. You are a team of three goblins facing the opposing team of the same number. The ball is a skull and needs to be placed in the opposing teams’ goal for two seconds to be awarded a point. You also have the option at times to score several extra points when portal like objects appear and depending on the distance thrown from can affect the score.

You are also armed with clubs, with the ability to kill opposing team members but if you are not too careful your own team members. If you are taken down there is a respawn time and you become a ghost. With the ability to move a lot faster and choose you respawn location. But you can also commit suicide during the game to take advantage of this speed and re-appear wherever you see fit on the field (Graveyard). It is quite a fun game, full of funny physics and a comedic voice over. Allowing this to be a hugely popular multiplayer game. But for me it does not feel as responsive as it should, has the movement feel of a D-Pad.

You can unlock further items in game using the currency gained from playing games. From hairstyles, masks, and taunts to style out your Goblin as you see fit. These are limited at this moment in time and are on a roll basis. So, you can purchase a mask, but it will loot roll in a sense so not being able to pick and choose from the list is a bit of a kick in the teeth.

It is a good effort on a fun alternative to multiplayer sports, but still needs some polishing. The voice over is funny to a point but can seem a bit repetitive. The controls as stated also need some work, not feeling too responsive at times and making it more frustrating in them clinches to gain back the ball.
