Marvel’s Spider-Man for Playstation 4 is the latest title by Insomniac Games and is easily one of the most anticipated titles in a long time.

Marvel’s Spider-Man takes place in a vast open-world version of New York and begins with you, Peter Parker being woken up by his mobile phone with an alert that police are mobilizing with plans to take down Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime. He quickly freshens up, makes some toast then slaps on his famous red and blue tights. The game then immediately throws you into the role Spider-Man shooting spiderwebs from your wrists swinging from building to building as you make your way downtown to Fisk Tower.

As you play you’ll level up earning upgrade points which can be used in three different skill trees. These skill trees offer you the opportunity to upgrade your existing powers or unlock completely new ones. Also, completing different objectives around the map rewards you with six types of tokens. Research Missions and completing lab puzzles rewards you with Research tokens, specific combat, stealth, and traversal challenges give you Challenge tokens, taking pictures of different landmarks around the map rewards you with Landmark tokens, taking down criminal hideouts rewards you with base tokens, each backpack you collect gives you a Backpack token and finally, dealing with random crimes out on the streets will give you Crime tokens. These tokens can be used to craft the various gadgets and costumes available in the game.

As for controls, the on the ground combat looks and feels very similar to Rocksteady’s “Arkham” games, though with it’s own personal touch. The web slinging is also very simple and fun once you get a groove going. Press one button to catch onto the nearest building and another button to fire webs to propel yourself forward to maintain altitude. Thought, if find yourself slamming into the side of a building you’ll start running along it the face of it. Infact, Spider-Man can stick to, run up and jump off of just about any surface in the game.

Spider-Man's gadgets is where the combat shines and are the real core of this combat system. Before unlocking new gadgets you can use environmental objects (activated by L1+R1) such as a manhole cover or a nearby rubbish bin to soften up an enemy, but once you start unlocking the gadgets the combat really starts to get interesting. Concussion Blast, Electric Webs and Impact Webbing all make the combat in Marvel’s Spider-Man a hell of a lot of fun.

There is plenty to do in Marvel’s Spider-Man from clearing out enemy hideouts, completing side missions, tracking down backpacks left webbed across the city or taking photos of different landmarks around the city of New York. Completing any of these will gain you experience which can be used to unlock new abilities, alternate suits, costume mods and gadgets. There are 25 different suits to collect with each one having a different ability. The good thing here is, after unlocking it, you can equip any ability onto any previous suit.

Now, I already hear you all thinking, this sounds a little repetitive, sure in a way it is but Insomniac Games have done a fantastic job of making them bearable and weaving them in and out of stuff you’re already doing.

As for the presentation of this game, one word, AMAZING. Insomniac’s attention to details are nothing short of amazing. Glass faced buildings reflect their surroundings, people on the sidewalk ask you for high fives or want a photo, police chases and random crimes break out when you’re close by, this all gives the world the feeling it’s living and breathing around you.

Insomniac Games, you’ve done it again. Marvel’s Spider-Man in my opinion just might be one of, if not the greatest superhero video game to date and is definitely worth your hard earned dollars if you own a PS4.
