Sega Mega Drive Classics is a collection of 50 classic titles from the golden era of gaming which includes some well known games such as Sonic, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter plus many many more.

The retro gaming feel even flows into how the games menu is designed. Rather than the game presenting you a list of titles to choose from, the game loads you into a 3D simulation of a childs bedroom right out of the 90s. You’ll go to your games shelf to choose a game, check the audio setting via a amplifier on the ground or pick up the phone to arrange online multiplayer games. It’s all been planned out very well.

Once you’ve selected the game you want to play, head over to the Mega Drive below the TV. From here you can apply things like bilinear blurring, antialiasing and a few other scaling options. Though, in all honesty I ended up just leaving all these settings on default, but the options are there if you choose to play around with them.

So, how do the games look and run on a current gen console? Well, they look and feel great, just as each game would have played back in the day. Even on a 4K TV games ran smooth and retained that retro feel we all grew up with. Simply being able to play amazing games like Wonder Boy and Golden Axe on the big screen was more than enough for me.

900x 1

Something else that really surprised me was the ability to play online with some games, something that just wasn’t possible all those years ago. And it doesn’t stop with the addition of online play.

Sega Mega Drive Classics also includes achivements and trophies, leaderboards and challenges. These challenges can be pretty tough too. For example, Streets of Rage requires you to reach the end without using a single continue. These challenges really keep you going back over and over again trying to complete as many as possible.

Overall, Sega Mega Drive Classics is a very nice and welcome package offering over 50 16-bit titles for a very reasonable price. The addition of online play, leaderboards, and challenges really help flesh it all out and worth the pick up.
