World of Warcraft is one of the most iconic MMOs ever made, but with over 20 years’ worth of expansions, patches, and even revamped versions of the game, it can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve never played it before.
To make things a bit less confusing, we’ve put together this beginner-friendly guide that covers all the game’s basics and helps you start your adventure in Azeroth on the right foot.
The Many Versions of World of Warcraft
One of the most interesting things about World of Warcraft is that it doesn’t just exist as one game but actually comes in several different versions.
WoW Retail, also known as modern WoW, is the most up-to-date version of the game that keeps evolving through new expansions and content patches.
Then there’s WoW Classic, a nostalgic recreation of how the game used to be many years ago. It lets players experience Azeroth as it was back in the day, with slower leveling and a more old-school approach with fewer hints and less guidance. Over time, Blizzard has transformed Classic into multiple versions of its own:
- Classic Era is a “frozen” version of Vanilla WoW with no updates or new content, preserved exactly as it was in 2004-2005.
- Season of Discovery is also based on Vanilla, but with slight gameplay changes and fresh content.
- Progression Classic is a reimagined Classic that launched in 2019 and has been moving through the original expansions; currently, it’s on Mists of Pandaria Classic.
- Hardcore Classic is another Vanilla version, but with a permanent death mechanic.
The Start of Your Journey: Leveling
Leveling is the first stage of your World of Warcraft journey. It’s how your character grows stronger, learns new abilities, and unlocks access to more challenging content.
You gain experience points (XP) mainly by completing quests, small missions given by NPCs (non-player characters). Quests can ask you to defeat monsters, collect items, deliver messages, or help out local characters in different zones. They also teach you how the game works, reward you with currency, different useful items, and story context about the world.
You can also level by simply fighting mobs, the creatures that populate Azeroth. Every time you defeat a mob, you gain a bit of XP and loot.
Another great way to level is by running dungeons, short cooperative adventures for five players. Dungeons offer faster XP gain and better rewards, but in order to complete them, you’ll need to work closely with your team and fight enemies together.
Gearing
Gear is the equipment your character wears, including weapons, armor, rings, cloaks, and so on. Each piece comes with an item level, which shows its power and adds to your character’s overall strength. The higher your item level, the better you perform in combat. By constantly upgrading your gear, you’ll be able to take on tougher challenges and earn better rewards.
While leveling, you’ll get most of your gear from quests, dungeons, and defeated mobs. Once you hit the level cap, you’ll enter the endgame, a more advanced, content-rich stage of WoW that offers the most challenging and rewarding activities that will be your new sources of gear:
- Mythic+ Dungeons: These are harder versions of dungeons with increasing difficulty levels (“keys”). Each key has a timer, and some come with additional modifiers called affixes, which alter mechanics and make fights more difficult.
- Raids: Large-scale group challenges for 10-40 players where you face powerful bosses with complex mechanics. Raids drop some of the strongest gear in the game and require top-notch teamwork.
- Delves (Retail-only): Smaller-scale instances that can be completed solo with an NPC companion or as part of a group.
You can also craft your gear or buy it from other players, but you’ll need gold, which we’ll cover in detail in the next section.
Gold and the In-Game Economy
No matter which version of WoW you play, gold is the main currency that fuels Azeroth’s economy. Gold is used for just about everything, from learning new skills to buying various items.
There are many ways to earn gold. You can start out by completing quests and selling unwanted loot to NPC vendors. The most profitable methods, however, involve the Auction House, WoW’s player-driven marketplace, where you can buy and sell almost any item you get your hands on.
Another way to make gold is through professions, your character’s special trade skills. Some professions are gathering-based (like Mining, Herbalism, or Skinning), allowing you to collect resources from mobs or the environment. Others are crafting-based (like Alchemy, Blacksmithing, or Tailoring), where you can turn various materials into potions, armor, and other useful items. Everything you gather or craft can either be used to improve your own character or sold to other players for profit.
And if you want to save time and skip the grind, you can also buy WoW gold on special platforms and services in any amount you need.
What Else Is Waiting for You In the Game
By now, we’ve covered all the basics of your journey, but there are still so many more features and activities for you to discover and explore in WoW. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Player vs. Player (PvP)
If you’d like to test your skills against real people, WoW’s PvP system offers several ways to do it.
You can duel other players in the open world on special PvP servers in Classic or by toggling the War Mode in WoW Retail. You can also fight in large-scale Battlegrounds with specific objectives, or compete in smaller Arenas where it’s all about strategy and class knowledge. Both modes have their own ranking system: you earn points, climb ladders, and unlock different rewards like titles, mounts, and unique PvP gear.
Guilds and Community
A big part of the game’s activities is built around teamwork and social interaction, and one of the best ways to find a group is by joining a guild.
Guilds are like small communities within WoW, where you can not only team up for content, but also ask for advice or simply have fun hanging out with like-minded gamers.
WoW also has one of the most active gaming communities out there. Players create guides, share tips, and discuss news on forums, Discord servers, and fan sites like Wowhead or Icy Veins. Even if you’re completely new to the game, you’ll always find a place to learn and connect with others and plenty of players ready to lend a hand.
Loot and Rewards
Nearly everything you do in-game, whether it’s defeating an enemy, completing a quest, or clearing a dungeon, gives you loot or currencies that can be used to improve your character.
Besides gear, there’s a massive variety of collectible and usable items in the game:
- Mounts are creatures you can ride or fly on.
- Pets are cute companions that follow you around; some are purely cosmetic, while others can participate in pet battles.
- Toys are special items that can create fun visual effects or give you useful bonuses.
- Transmogs (short for “transmogrifications”) let you change how your gear looks without affecting its stats.
- Consumables are items like potions, flasks, and food that temporarily boost your stats or help you recover health and mana.
Many players end up building massive collections of thousands of items, hunting down rare mounts, pets, and appearances, which can be really addictive and incredibly satisfying, even if it takes patience (and a bit of luck).
