Throughout the international gaming world, this popular source of entertainment is becoming more social and interactive than ever before. The online era is generating endless new possibilities for competition and connection amongst gamers, and this is becoming increasingly evident in the iGaming space, where streaming, sweepstakes platforms and online tournaments are quickly becoming widespread. With more players seeking out these innovative new formats, we sat down with Casino.org expert Ian Zerafa, who offered his insights into the rise of social casino entertainment across the industry today.
Hi Ian, thanks for joining us today. Before we get started, we’d appreciate it if you talk us through your experience in the online casino world – what drove you to become an iGaming specialist?
Thanks, it’s great to be here. I’ve been immersed in the iGaming industry since 2021, and have worked at some of the world’s biggest casino sites in that time, leading teams of reviewers and experts from around the world. For me, specializing in this thrilling corner of the gaming sector was a no-brainer. I’ve always loved gaming in my own time, and I love how there’s always something new to discover. As part of my role as Content Manager at Casino.org, I’ve become accustomed to taking deep-dives into different platforms and I’ve developed quite a keen eye for the characteristics of a leading online casino site today. It’s important to me to share that knowledge, especially because of my background in journalism. I really enjoy supporting players to access the information they’re looking for – especially since this industry can get so crowded!
Throughout the gaming world, we’ve been witnessing a rising demand for more social and collective styles of play. Social casino games have become increasingly popular over the past few years – what do you think is driving this growth?
Recently, there’s definitely been a real shift in how players are approaching their online casino gaming sessions. Increasingly they are looking for a shared and very social experience – whether that’s through competition-based activities, live streaming and chat features, or immersive, interactive online tournaments. As you say, I think this is a trend that’s been picking up pace throughout the wider world of gaming, as people are responding positively to these widespread opportunities for connection and interaction with other players and like-minded people. It’s also down to the growing availability of opportunities for social gameplay. Many leading operators have been working hard to respond to this growing demand for social casino games, and they’re beginning to tailor their offerings accordingly. The iGaming world is definitely becoming a much more communal space, and that’s really exciting!
Sweepstakes casinos have also attracted a lot of attention in the sector in recent years, especially in North America. Why do you think this unique gaming model has been growing at such a dramatic rate?
Sweepstakes platforms are really interesting, as they’re managed to carve out a unique space within the wider iGaming landscape today. As we all know, there’s a real patchwork of legislation that currently exists in North America with regards to online gambling activities. In the US, where online casino platforms are regulated at the state level, there’s a very varied picture for players and operators to navigate, with iGaming still fully outlawed in many states across the nation. Thanks to their distinct status and gaming model, it’s understandable that sweepstakes casinos have become so popular within this fragmented regulatory landscape. There are various options available on Casino.org for fans of sweepstakes gaming in the US right now, and the accessibility and ease of the format has attracted a wide base of players who are looking for low-pressure, flexible experiences where the entertainment comes first.
It feels like a very exciting time in the industry as a whole, and recent advancements in gaming technology are creating some incredible new opportunities for gamers. In your opinion, which tech trends will have the biggest impact on the future of iGaming?
It’s certainly an exciting time. Over at Casino.org, our role revolves around these advancements in gaming tech, as it’s our mission to assess all the latest platforms, games and trends as they arrive on the scene. My colleagues and I are always reflecting on this very question, as the sector is headed in so many exhilarating new directions right now. For me personally, I do think that AI will have an enormous impact on the iGaming world in the next few years, as it has the potential to completely reshape the user experience. For players, the online casino world is set to become much more unique and personalized, with customized games, promotions and opportunities quickly becoming the norm on a much wider scale. Meanwhile, I think we’ll continue to see a greater overlap between online casino gaming and social interaction, as these highly social and immersive iGaming trends show no sign of abating anytime soon.
Lastly, what does the rise of social casinos and sweepstakes gaming tell us about the US online casino market today, alongside the broader world of online entertainment?
Overall, I think it speaks of a cultural shift in the gaming sector as a whole. It tells us that today’s players are seeking out two key elements from their entertainment experiences today – community and convenience. Over at Casino.org, we’re seeking that our readers are looking for iGaming opportunities that are really engaging and immersive, and they want to access their favorite sites and games as easily as possible. We know of course that this has been accelerated by the rise of more casual gaming formats and smartphone-based activities. The growth of social casinos and sweepstakes gaming is reflective of much wider trends, as this popular activity has migrated from brick-and-mortar destinations and has become a completely varied, customizable and immersive experience. Looking ahead, I think it’s important to recognize that players want more than just games – they’re also seeking out interaction and an exciting, frictionless style of entertainment.
Thanks for your time, Ian – we’re looking forward to hearing from you as the developments continue!
