EA Sports College Football 26 is a dream come true for die-hard college football fans, bringing the energy, emotion, and intensity of Saturdays back where it belongs, on the sticks. Developed by EA Orlando and published by Electronic Arts, this next-gen exclusive is built on the Frostbite Engine, delivering the most realistic and immersive college football experience to date. It delivers all 134 FBS teams, electric crowds, and hard-hitting action that feels straight out of a packed stadium, from kickoff to the final whistle – this is college football and full throttle. 

EA has stepped up its gameplay, offering deeper mechanics and smarter football across the board. Offensively and defensively, everything feels more refined and polished than last year. Dynamic Substitutions gives you the power to rotate key players at crucial moments, letting you manage on-field fatigue and adjust strategy in real time and with over 300 real-world coaches like Kirby Smart, who coaches Universey of Georgia or Dan Lanning who coaches the Oregon Ducks and all coaches have there own unique playbook and coaching style so you will need to think like a true coach if you want to win and adapt and overcome the changes. 

The gameplay depth does not stop there; the game introduces 10 new player archetypes and 84 total abilities, providing all athletes with more variety and flexibility to suit their gameplay. There has been a role created for everyone, regardless of whether you’re building a spread offence or a lockdown defence. Home Field Advantage has also been revamped this year with version 2.0, which means you can expect more stadium pulse effects, such as aggressive camera shaking, clock distortion, and disruptive visuals, that pump you up for those key moments. There have been a couple of other changes, such as smarter and better AI, which are better at playing, play-calling, and organising those custom defensive zones. EA have pulled out all the stops this year and created the most authentic experience to date. 

The multiplayer experience in EA Sports College Football 26 needs some polish. Whilst it’s great to jump online with a mate, some noticeable delays impacted the flow of the game. At times, those delays were momentum killers, like when your quarterback would throw it up the field, there was a delay, and an interception would happen, or you would get smashed by the defence before even throwing the ball. Kicking also felt off, with field goals after touchdowns being almost impossible ot nail unless you were right in front of the upright. It’s a mode that’s fun to play, but it needs a little polishing to get it ironed out. 

Dynasty mode puts you in the driver’s seat as the head coach of your favourite college team, giving you full control over recruiting, game strategy, and building that championship legacy all coaches strive for.  Whether you are rebuilding a smaller school’s team or going into a powerhouse team to the national title, every decision matters. You need to manage all the coaching staff and ensure your players are passing their grades to be able to play on the field. Dynasty mode provides an authentic and rewarding experience, allowing fans to control every aspect of their college football program. 

Road to Glory allows you to be the one shining in the stadium lights, being a single-player career mode where you create your legacy on the field. You start as a high school standout, and the aim is to become a college football legend. You start the mode by creating your athlete, choosing your position, and competing in high-stakes high school games to earn invitations to join college teams and score a scholarship. Once you’ve committed to a college, the grind begins. I committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies, and that’s when you need to learn to balance performance on and off the field with building your personal brand, academics, and ensuring you’re not injured through training. No week feels quite like the last, and you feel the pressure of making sure you’re passing college while also making a name for yourself on the field. 

Fan favourite game mode makes a return in EA Sports College Football 26, with Ultimate Team always being something everyone comes back to. From last year, the developers have turned it up to eleven. This year’s mode delves even deeper into the long and rich history of college football, allowing you to build a stacked lineup featuring current stars, all-time greats, and rising talent across the board.

Whether you’re grinding through the solo challenges, competing online in head-to-head matches, or completing the cool themed events tied to real college football moments, there is always something cool to do and chase in Ultimate Team. There have been some updates, including enhanced customisation, dynamic player upgrades, and expanded uniform, stadium, and playbook sections. It’s the most personalised experience yet. 

Road to the College Football Playoff (CFP) returns in this year’s title, bringing back the intense, season-long battle to reach the sport’s biggest stage. Building on last year’s foundations that the developers placed, this mode puts you in control of your team’s destiny; every game, every ranking, and every decision matters. Whether you’re leading a powerhouse or trying to take a dark horse program to glory, you’ll need to navigate the ups and downs of the full season, climb the ranking and show the committee you are the best. This year’s presentation features an updated design, enhanced AI, and even more authentic-feeling scenarios, which bring the drama and passion to the game. 

I loved the audio in last year’s game, and EA Sports College Football 26 is no exception, delivering one of the most immersive experiences in sports gaming. From the thunderous roar of the crowd when the stadium erupts to the iconic sound of the marching bands, every moment feels electric. This year kicks off with a reimagined “Campus Clash Theme”, performed by the Auburn University Marching Band, which won the “Whom The Band Tolls” competition, bringing Kris Bowers’ powerful composition to life.

EA has also added 49 fight songs for schools like Ohio State, Georgia, and Tax A&M, building on the already impressive 181 tracks from CFB25. To top it all off, the menu soundtrack gets a bold upgrade with 16 marching band versions of mainstream hits, including Blinding Lights, DNA, and Swag Surfin. It’s the perfect blend of tradition, hype and heart-pounding stadium energy. 

I’ll forever enjoy playing these games purely because there is never much difference in the controls from year to year, which can become overwhelming. Still, it instantly feels familiar to long-time fans, offering the two distinct control schemes we are all used to: one for offence and the other for defence.

Whether you’re slinging passes as a quarterback or locking down a receiver in defence, each side of the ball has its own tailored layout to ensure the gameplay stays smooth and responsive without becoming confusing.

The offensive controls offer tight handling for quick cuts, jukes, and passing, while the defensive setup emphasises timing tackles, switching players, and executing pass rush moves. I’m a strong believer in the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, and EA have hit the nail on the head with a system that balances accessibility for newcomers with enough depth to reward more skilled players, making each snap feel impactful on both sides. 

Visually, EA Sports College Football 26 is nothing short of spectacular, setting a new benchmark for realism in sports gaming. It’s built on the Frostbite Engine, which enables the game to capture every small detail, from the dazzling stadium lights to the explosive pregame pyrotechnics, to the dynamic shadows that stretch across the field as the sun sets over the horizon. The further you get into the game, the more the uniforms start getting dirty and scuffed, and almost every hit looks real and impactful.

I was impressed by how seamless the transitions were between plays, as well as the camera angles and broadcast-style overlays, which all looked and worked exceptionally well, making it almost feel like you were watching it on TV. While some tackles looked a little scuffed, like when you were taking the dive at someone from an unrealistic distance and somehow snapping onto them, it didn’t take away from the overall experience and might have saved me some touchdowns. Every visual element, from the cinematic intros to the mid-game replays, is crafted so well that it immerses you in the game. 

EA Sports College Football 26 builds on the strong foundations of last year’s return and delivers a deeper, more refined college football experience across the board. With its stunning visuals, realistic gameplay, revamped modes, and increased attention to the college tradition, it’s a love letter to the fans of the sport. Whether you’re grinding through Dynasty, chasing glory in Road to CFP, or lighting up the scoreboard in Ultimate Team, there’s something here for every type of player. The game is not without flaws, but the overall package is a powerhouse.
