Developer Superkami brought Sengoku Dynasty to PC on the 7th November 2024. It is now making its debut on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 with Publisher Toplitz Productions. Superkami are no beginners in the field, with several titles under their belt, even with another new release this month called Wild West Simulator. They are hardworking and are open about their roadmaps to their titles.

Coming to Xbox Series X on the 21st August 2025, Sengoku Dynasty is a 1-4 player cooperative survival game with cross-platform capabilities. Co-op works by using server codes created by the host for you to join, or you can host your server and have your code shared with them.

But does it hold up? Survival games are a hard market to push on consoles due to their limitations at times, but can Superkami make the next big survival on consoles?

To begin, you have four difficulties to choose from based on your gameplay style. Creative, Chillout, Normal, and Hardcore. My choice, as in most cases in gaming, was normal, the middle ground. It has a basic character creator, but it is only what it needs for the setting of the game, with options to choose your background, such as Peasant, which has no starting perk, to Hunter, which has starting perks, such as gaining 15% more warrior XP.

Then the hand-drawn style intro begins, explaining that war has ravaged your lands, and you flee to find a better life. This involves rebuilding your village and community, and here lies the base of the game. Community is a big part of the rebuild, and I will explain more as I go on. You find yourself on a beach after a ship crash, and you are tasked with finding your companion.

The controls to the game can feel a little complicated at times, but this has always been an issue for me when games of this type come to consoles. As with PC, you have so many options available for control keys, but translating those to the controller can be quite a difficult task. Superkami has done a pretty good job in making it as accessible as possible, but sometimes, or maybe it’s my old age memory, remembering the correct keys to get to where you want is taxing at times.

Graphically, the game is beautifully rendered and holds up extremely well on console. It has all the right appeal for its aesthetics and just feels pretty solid. From the moving of the bushes and trees, with the shadowing from the sunlight, to the lighting of torches in the evening. It all holds up at a high level.

As with most games similar to Sengoku Dynasty, you need to grind resources to begin making your tools and housing. But it goes deeper than this in building communities. You will need to build up communities to help the village thrive, from designating tasks to your helpers.

The building in the game is simple, but you can make masterpieces out of the village. With the ability to place down the blueprints before adding resources, you can see how it fits into your village.

Sengoku Dynasty will get more of my time; I thoroughly enjoy it, and being a fan of the culture in this title makes it that much more enjoyable. Beautiful graphics, great sound work, and the community element make it that much more enjoyable, helping reduce some of the grinding tasks.
