Pac-Man World 2 Re-PAC brings a beloved chapter of gaming history back to life on the PlayStation 5, giving fans both old and new a fresh chance to chomp through one of Pac-Man’s most memorable adventures. It was originally released back in 2002 as a part of the Pac-Man World series. This game combined classic arcade charm with vibrant 3D platforming. Now, with modern upgrades and some polish, this remastered version breathes new energy into the title.

Developed by NOW Production and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Pac-Man World 2 Re-PAC delivers improved visuals, smoother performance, and quality of life enhancements while staying true to the colourful, action-packed spirit that made the original a hit on the PlayStation 2.

The story for Pac-Man World 2 Re-PAC kicks off when the mischievous Ghost Gang sneaks into Pac-Village and wipes out the legendary Golden Fruit. Their prank has disastrous consequences, as the theft accidentally unleashes the ancient and all-powerful ghost king, Spooky.

With Pac-Land thrown into danger, it’s up to Pac-Man to journey through the forests, mountains, oceans, and haunted realms to reclaim the Golden Fruit. Along the way, you will need to use the classic chomps, power-ups, and platforming skills to defeat the Ghosts and Spooky’s minions and restore peace to Pac-Village.

The gameplay delivers a solid mix of platforming, collecting, and combat that feels both faithful to the original and refreshed for a modern audience. Levels are fun to run through, with most of the main missions being fairly quick to complete, giving that satisfying pick-up-and-play vibe.

What really stood out to me were the boss fights. I was a fan of how they were actually tough enough that you couldn’t just breeze through them like the main missions, and you really needed to slow down and think about what you were doing. Combined with smooth controls and responsive moments, the gameplay hits the sweet spot of being accessible while still offering enough challenge to keep you hooked.

The sound design strikes a fun balance between nostalgia and polish, breathing new life into the classic platformer. The remaster keeps many of the iconic Pac-Man jingles and effects, so longtime fans will instantly recognise them. Like the iconic “wake” chomp and upbeat stage clear tune, but it’s all been cleaned up with sharper audio quality to suit modern-day gaming.

The ambient sounds, such as waterfalls, wind, and enemy cues, have more depth than the original, and the boss battles benefit from punchier music and clearer sound effects, which are sometimes a little over the top. I was a big fan of the mix of retro charm and modern clarity, which gives the game a really nice, fresh coat of paint for your audio needs.

When it comes to the controls, it felt smooth and responsive on the PlayStation 5, making it easy to jump, butt-bounce, and chomp your way through each level. The remaster preserves the classic control scheme while refining the movement to feel more fluid than the original PlayStation 2 release. Pac-Man’s moveset is simple but versatile, and pulling off the platforming challenges or dodging those pesky enemies never felt clunky.

The only drawback I noticed was that the super bounce felt a little delayed or unresponsive when needed the most, which became frustrating. However, aside from that, the controls were solid and easily enjoyable. I was a little confused that the developers didn’t seem to want to utilise the triggers for more immersive gaming, and also the touchpad, which they probably could have done something with.

Visually, Pac-Man World 2 Re-PAC breathes new life into the colourful world of Pac-Land with updated textures, improved lighting, and smoother animations tailored for the current generation of gaming. The bright and vibrant environments, ranging from lush forests to icy peaks and underwater ruins, all feature far more detail than the original. At the same time, Pac-Man himself sports a polished design that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Personally, I was a huge fan of the bright, vibrant colours throughout the game; every level managed to burst with personality and charm, and it genuinely kept me wanting to keep looking the entire time. Character models are sharper, level designs feel more alive, and the overall presentation captures the charm of the 2002 classic while enhancing it for today’s players.

Overall, Pac-Man World 2 Re-PAC is a faithful and polished return to one of Pac-Man’s most underrated adventures. It manages to stay true to its 2002 roots while upgrading the experience with sharper visuals, cleaner sound designs, and smoother gameplay that feels right at home on the PlayStation 5. The fast-paced levels are easy to jump into, while the tougher boss fights provide a welcome layer of challenge.
