Bethesda Game Studios is gearing up to deliver one of the biggest updates for Starfield yet, with a massive content drop arriving on April 8. Headlined by the new Terran Armada story expansion, the Free Lanes update marks a significant evolution for the ever-expanding sci-fi RPG, introducing new systems, gameplay features, and narrative experiences designed to reshape how players explore the Settled Systems.
Since its launch in 2023, Bethesda Game Studios has steadily released a stream of updates for Starfield, including new gameplay systems, quality-of-life improvements, and a wealth of community-driven Creations. With over 1,000 Creations already available, the game has evolved well beyond its original release, offering players more ways than ever to tailor their journey among the stars.
Available for everyone, the Free Lanes update comes with a substantial amount of content, including the introduction of cruise mode. Players will soon be able to seamlessly journey between planets within star systems, offering more chances to encounter dynamic events or spend more time aboard their ship and get to know the crew. This shift aims to make space traversal feel more immersive and connected than ever before.
Alongside this, Bethesda has included a host of additional locations, including new encounters, points of interest, and unique dungeons, offering more opportunities for players to explore and find new resources. Known as X-Tech, the new resource expands upgrade possibilities for weapons and ship modules, allowing players to customise their experience.
A new ground vehicle, the Moon Jumper, will help players explore these new locations, where they’ll need to face off against a new range of enemies. Enhanced with modifiers, such as additional shielding, more frequent special attacks, and a variety of elemental damage, players will encounter tougher and more diverse combat scenarios as they seek out the exotic new resources.
While you’re out exploring, you’ll also have the chance to encounter new companions, Muria and the mini-bot, and should you decide to follow your destiny and become a Starborn, You’ll gain the ability to carry a limited number of selected items through the Unity, starting your New Game Plus experience with a slight advantage.
For starship captains wanting to live a more peaceful existence, the outpost management system has been overhauled with cross-outpost storage, streamlining resource handling, and making an honest living less tedious. While you’re building up your resources, you’ll also be able to play with your new pet, the Milliewhale.
The update continues to build on the Trackers Alliance content introduced in 2024, adding five new bounty hunting adventures. These new missions expand the system with additional targets, contracts, and rewards, giving players more ways to engage with the bounty hunter playstyle. Existing owners of the Trackers Alliance content will receive these additions at no extra cost, while new players can unlock the full experience through Creations Credits.
As a brand-new storyline, the Terran Armada DLC introduces an expansive questline spanning the Settled Systems. Freely available for Xbox and Steam users who own Starfield’s Premium Edition, it introduces fresh characters, new locations, and a variety of enemies and rewards. Players will find themselves at the center of a conflict with the Terran Armada. Seeking to unite humanity under a single banner, and their robotic forces will stop at nothing to achieve their goal, the story is set to deliver a new layer of narrative depth to Starfield’s already incredible experience.
Launching on April 8, the Free Lanes update also marks the arrival of Starfield on PlayStation 5, opening the door for a whole new audience to experience Bethesda’s ambitious space RPG, and it’s set to take full advantage of the console’s hardware. PlayStation owners will be able to utilise features such as adaptive triggers, the lightbar, and touchpad functionality, enhancing overall immersion, while players with the PlayStation 5 Pro will also have the option to choose between a Performance Mode for higher frame rates or a Visual Mode for enhanced graphical fidelity.
With the Free Lanes update, the Terran Armada story expansion, and the PlayStation 5 launch all arriving simultaneously, April 8 represents a major milestone for Starfield. Whether stepping into the universe for the first time or returning to see what’s changed, players can expect the most complete and refined version of the game to date.
