Good Luck (Steam) – Review

Good luck from developer Happybara games, described as “Physics-driven nightmare, every step is a trap”, as you navigate a city full of surprises. So let’s walk in and see how Good Luck plays from publisher Ultimate Games SA and Ultimate Publishing.

You are a businessman just trying to get to your meeting, simple, right? Wrong. Everything in this city is trying to stop you. You are forced to constantly look at your path through the city to see what hazards are surrounding you, from bins, oil slicks, banana skins, and manhole covers, just to name a few. Don’t think it’s just in front of you as well, you have to also see what is above you, from neon signs to large statues on balconies, ensuring you are watching every step you take.

You don’t have a save function either, so you are constantly thrown back to the start of the game if you die on your way through. This would have to be one of the most frustrating features, rather than having a simple checkpoint. I do understand this is how the developers get some longevity out of the game. While you remember where the dangers are as you keep resetting, you always seem to become complacent after numerous attempts.

Multiplayer mode is where the game comes alive as you try to outlast your mates through the streets. You can play with up to five other players in multiplayer mode. If you are playing the game on Steam as well, there are 19 different achievements you can unlock.

The graphics are cozy and have some nice details. The surrounding city is well put together, and you can only go one way, as barriers and natural roadblocks prevent you from deviating from the designed path. You have a walking, running, and jumping mechanic to assist you in the obstacle course. You cannot jump or run your way out of trouble.

If you are in the designated fall or hit zone of an obstacle, the game will freeze you, and you will die. I did find the walking system to be a bit off, as it takes an extra half-step after you let go of the keyboard button, which can be the difference between continuing on and having something fall on you.

You have an array of sounds, from the crushing impacts to the sounds of your footsteps as you walk along. Nothing outstanding, just solid, and you can tell they haven’t been forgotten.

Good Luck is a solid physics-based puzzle game, a very frustrating one at that, with no save or checkpoints. You will constantly be making your way back over the grounds you have covered many times before.

If you have some spare time and want to challenge yourself, jump in, but you have been warned, and the developers noted it on their Steam page; be prepared for some rage quits! Grab your friends, as well; it is good for a few laughs and some solid fun.
