With my feet firmly planted on the Marvel side of the comic universe fence, you can imagine my excitement when I arrived at the office to find a box with the words Magic: The Gathering and Marvel Super Heroes plastered across it.
Launching on June 26th, Magic: The Gathering has teamed up with Marvel to release an exciting new set themed around the Marvel Universe, and we were sent a themed package to help us start our journey.
Inside, we found a Wakanda Forever Commander Deck, featuring a 100-card deck centred around T’Challa, The Black Panther. If you’re looking to jump straight into a game without worrying about deck building, Commander decks like this are a fantastic starting point. Everything you need is included in the box, making it easy for new players to learn the game while also giving experienced players a solid foundation to customize and expand upon later.
The package also includes a themed deck box, so you can safely transport your new deck between games.
We also received a Bundle Box filled with nine Play Boosters, each containing fourteen random cards from the Marvel Super Heroes range. It serves as an excellent starting point for collectors and players alike, providing plenty of cards to build decks with while offering that familiar excitement of opening pack after pack to see which heroes, villains, and locations you uncover.
The package also contains an oversized spin-down life counter, also known as a D20, but these have been specifically coloured and themed for the Marvel universe, and as an added bonus, the heavy cardboard box works well to store any unused cards.
That wasn’t all, though. Wizards of the Coast also included additional Play Boosters, a selection of Jumpstart Boosters, several Collector Boosters, and a Marvel Super Heroes Scene Box.
The Play Boosters are exactly what most players will be looking for when expanding their collection. Just like those included in the Bundle box, each pack contains a mix of 14 cards designed for both gameplay and collecting, with the possibility of pulling rare and highly desirable cards.
Every pack opening feels a little different, and as a Marvel fan, there was something genuinely exciting about discovering familiar characters appearing in card form.
The Jumpstart Boosters offer one of the easiest ways for new players to get into the game, where players can simply combine two or three Jumpstart packs together, and they have a playable deck ready to go. Each pack contains a selection of 20 cards, typically focused around one of the five possible mana pools, with the appeal being that you don’t know which mana pools you’re pulling from.
It’s a straightforward approach that removes much of the complexity of deck building, making it perfect for casual games with friends or introducing someone to Magic: The Gathering for the first time.
Collectors will undoubtedly be drawn to the Collector Boosters. These premium packs feature some of the most visually impressive cards available in the set, including special treatments, alternate artwork, foils, and other highly sought-after variants. Opening them feels less like buying cards to play and more like opening a treasure chest, with every pack offering the possibility of finding something truly special.
One of the more interesting products we received was the Marvel Super Heroes Scene Box, which focuses on the collectible side of the hobby. The box includes foil cards featuring the original Avengers, which can be included in your games, along with matching art cards that combine to create a larger display piece.
A cardboard stand is included so you can show off the artwork, and three Play Booster packs round out the package with a chance to add even more cards to your collection.
What makes this collaboration work so well is that it doesn’t simply place Marvel artwork onto existing cards. Instead, it feels like a genuine celebration of both franchises, combining Magic’s strategic gameplay with some of Marvel’s most iconic heroes and locations.
For comic book fans, there’s an undeniable thrill in seeing familiar characters appear on beautifully illustrated cards, while Magic players gain a fresh new set packed with exciting cards to collect, build around, and play.
