Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the mechanical keyboard space has exploded in recent years, shifting from a niche hobby to a mainstream obsession and brands like EPOMAKER have been a big part of that rise. They are well known for delivering affordable, highly customisable keyboards with EPOMAKER, earning a reputation as the go-to brand for premium features without a premium price tag.

The company is based in China and operates as an online-only brand. The company built its identity around bringing innovative OEM designs to a global audience. With the release of the EPOMAKER HE68 Lite, they are stepping further into the spotlight, aiming to blend cutting-edge features with everyday usability, something that feels right at home for a brand that thrives on pushing accessible performance.

The EPOMAKER HE68 Lite comes in a compact, well-presented package that includes the keyboard itself, a detachable USB-A to USB-C cable, a keycap and switch puller, a small set of extra switches and screws, a strap with accessories, and the owner’s manual.

Visually, it really embraces the minimalist 65% layout, with a total of 68 keys, built around a matte-black ABS plastic case that looks and feels clean and durable. The surface has a smooth, non-glossy texture that looks great, and the overall shape has simple, slightly rounded edges that give it a modern vibe.

The keycaps are made from a double-shot Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT), which offers a slightly textured, slightly grainy feel that feels great on the touch. There are a couple of keys that have a subtle brown accent, which are ESC, Enter and Space, which added some visual contrast to the keyboard without breaking the aesthetic. I loved when the RGB backlighting was acting; it created a beautiful underglow across the keys, keeping that sleek, professional look rather than blaring lights in your eyes.

The keyboard is built with performance as its core focus, using Hall Effect magnetic switches that enable higher, more precise, and fully adjustable actuation. Instead of the fixed point actuation, which allows you to fine-tune the key travel anywhere from 0.1mm to 3.4mm in 0.01mm increments, which, if you have those more sweaty moments, you can pretty much set up the keyboard to eliminate the dead zone for instant key registration.

The keyboard also features an ultra-high 8,000Hz polling rate paired with the 128kHz scan rate, which results in extremely low latency of around 0.125ms, which is ideal for competitive play. The keyboard also features SOCD (Snap Key), Dynamic Keystroke (DKS), and Mod Tap (MT), which add further functionality. In terms of performance, the HE68 Lite delivers fast, consistent, and accurate input registration, which is well-suited for FPS games where timing is critical.

The Hall Effect switches provide a smooth, linear keystroke. The one downside I found was the wired-only connection, which meant it lacked wireless flexibility. In saying this, a wired connection eliminates potential latency or power saving compromises associated with wireless operation.

There is some accompanying software, both available on Windows and Mac, commonly known as EPOMAKER configuration software or EPOMAKER driver/software. It’s a free download from the official website and is used to unlock and customise the keyboard’s features. You can adjust the key actuation points, as I mentioned before, down to 0.01mm. You can set or remove deadzones and configure the Hall Effect specific behaviour to suit your playstyle.

It also allows you to program macros, remap keys, enable dynamic keystroke (DKS) and Mod Tap (MT) functions, and play around with RGB lighting effects like brightness, speed, and dynamic effects saved in profiles. I found the user interface a little clunky compared to other software. It’s functional but not pretty, and would be great for more advanced users looking to really get down to the nitty-gritty of customising the keyboard.

Once familiar with the software, the navigation becomes manageable, though it may not be immediately intuitive for first-time users. Overall, it’s a capable companion app that delivers what it needs to, just needs some polish to really make it shine.

Overall, the EPOMAKER HE68 Lite stands out as a feature-packed, compact keyboard that punches well above its price point of $74 AUD. It’s a combination of Hall Effect magnetic switches, ultra-low latency at an 8,000Hz polling rate, and highly customisable actuation points that make it a particularly appealing budget-friendly keyboard for competitive play.
