I’ve always found the idea of building a small form factor PC intimidating. Not only are you limited in physical space, but when you look at all of the components required to build a PC, you start to wonder what you’ll need to sacrifice to make it all work.
The ROG Strix B850-I Gaming WiFi is ASUS’s latest Mini-ITX motherboard for AMD’s Ryzen 9000, 8000, and 7000 series processors, and although it measures in at a mere 17 x 17 cm, it still manages to offer top-tier capabilities.
It comes equipped with the kind of hardware and design flourishes you’d expect from a full-sized premium ROG board, supporting up to 128GB of DDR5 memory capable of speeds up to 8400+ MT/s (OC) when paired with the right CPU.
ASUS has also included a host of tuning tools, including EXPO, AEMP, and even AI Cache Boost, which optimises CPU cache and memory pathways for faster local LLM performance on Ryzen 9000 chips. For enthusiasts, AI Overclocking and advanced features like Dynamic OC Switcher and Core Flex offer a wide range of control over performance and thermals.
Storage and expansion are handled smartly, with a single PCIe x16 slot supporting Gen 5.0 for Ryzen 9000 and 7000 CPUs, or Gen 4.0 for Ryzen 8000, along with the Q-Release Slim for easier GPU swaps in tight builds.
For drives, you get two PCIe M.2 slots, both supporting Gen 5.0 when paired with the Ryzen 9000 or 7000 CPUs, with the primary slot coming with a dedicated heatsink. You’ll also find two SATA ports for extra capacity, and although this is limited compared to ATX boards, the setup is more than enough for a compact or portable build.
Connectivity is a major highlight, with the rear I/O offering eight USB ports, alongside HDMI and audio connections. This includes a 20 Gbps USB-C, with a second that supports 10Gbps transfers and DisplayPort function, four 10 Gbps USB, and two USB 2.0 ports. It can also support another 10 Gbps USB-C, along with 5 Gbps and 2.0 options on the case I/O panel.
With an Intel 2.5 Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7, networking is equally strong, and it uses the Q-Antenna setup for better signal quality and a simple setup. To tie it all together, AI Networking II helps optimise traffic on the fly, keeping latency-sensitive tasks like gaming and streaming prioritised.
ASUS didn’t overlook the details either. The board includes thoughtful cooling support with multiple fan headers, an AIO pump header, and enough aRGB headers to light up a small disco. Audio comes courtesy of the SupremeFX ALC4080 codec, delivering high-resolution playback, premium components, and Dolby Atmos support, impressive for a board this size.
Maintaining their Easy-to-DIY ideology, the ROG Strix B850-I Gaming WiFi motherboard includes plenty of builder-friendly touches.
The I/O shield has been pre-mounted, BIOS FlashBack is quick and easy to access, the Q-Latch system on M.2 drives makes swapping out drives simple, and the diagnostic Q-LED indicators allow you to identify issues at a glance. They’re useful tools regardless of your system, but even more so when working inside cramped ITX cases where every step of the build process counts.
For PC builders looking to harness the power of Ryzen in a compact, premium setup, the ROG Strix B850-I Gaming WiFi motherboard is a strong contender. With its combination of PCIe 5.0 readiness, high-speed DDR5 support, cutting-edge connectivity, and AI-assisted tuning, it delivers a feature set that feels firmly next-gen, all within a remarkably small form factor.

The Good
- Compact Mini-ITX size without major compromises
- PCIe 5.0 support for GPUs and storage (on Ryzen 9000/7000)
- High-speed DDR5 (up to 128GB, 8400+ MT/s OC)
- Builder-friendly features/Easy to DIY
- Strong cooling and RGB support for its size
The Bad
- Limited expandability
- ITX form factor demands careful case and cooling choices
- PCIe version is affected by the CPU choice
