When it comes to monitors, I am quite happy with having two 27-inch monitors. They’re big enough for what I do and comfortably fit side-by-side on my desk. The only thing I regret is buying two 4K monitors that are only capable of 60Hz refresh rates. Sure, they’re decent for photo editing and OK for video editing, but they lack some important features that a true gaming monitor provides. The ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG gaming monitor could answer all my problems.
It comes with everything you need to connect it to your computer or console, which is more than I can say for some monitors I’ve used before. The box includes an HDMI and DisplayPort cable, a USB 3.2 cable, and a power supply. There’s also a microfibre cloth tucked away, making it easy to keep your monitor looking nice and pristine.
The monitor comes in three parts, but it’s incredibly easy to assemble; the screen attaches to the arm with a simple locking mechanism, and the arm is secured to the base using the pre-installed winged screw. It’s just that easy. However, the base is quite large in its design; it can take up some precious desk space, but it is reasonably flat and features a slot that allows you to rest a mobile device in a standing position – perfect if you’re using an app that mimics a Stream Deck or the like.
For the most part, it’s very unassuming in appearance, though I appreciate the RGB logo on the bottom of the screen. That all changes when you turn it around. One side of the rear panel showcases the ROG logo in glorious pixelated ARGB, completely supported by Armoury Crate and Aura-Sync. If you’re not connecting it to a PC, you can change the ARGB using built-in preset options.
The ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG gaming monitor can connect up to three devices through the two HDMI v2.0 sockets or the DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression. It also has two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports, allowing it to act as a USB hub, making it perfect for attaching peripherals such as webcams or charging whatever mobile device you have seated on the base. While it doesn’t come with built-in speakers, it does come with an earphone jack, so if you use it with a console, you can still connect external speakers or headphones.
As the name would suggest, the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG gaming monitor is classed as a 27-inch monitor, and it boasts a resolution of 2560×1440 at 240Hz and a response time of 0.03ms. Sure, it’s not 4K, but how often will the average person play an action-packed Triple-A game in 4K? I would much rather have the higher framerate, and realistically, at this size, the difference isn’t that noticeable.
Being a WOLED panel, colours are brighter, with the various shades melding seamlessly into one another, and blacks are typically darker, offering a much more realistic feel. As such, the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG benefits from a DCI-P3 colour space of 99%, with a sRGB colour space of 135%, generating up to 1073.7M colours. Throw in HDR10 support, and you’re looking at incredible colour production, perfect for gaming and editing content. The only real drawback I came across is that the display surface is glossy, and while this normally means the surface becomes very reflective, in this case, fingerprints are very obvious. It’s a good thing they provided that microfibre cloth.
When mounted on the included stand, the screen can be tilted back and forth, up to 20 degrees back or 5 degrees forward. I also appreciate that the monitor can be rotated 90 degrees in either direction for portrait orientation, allowing you to position the control panel away from other devices for easy access.
While the monitor itself doesn’t swivel, a mechanism built into the base allows the whole supporting arm to rotate up to 45 degrees each way. Movement on this is incredibly smooth, requiring minimal effort, and the monitor position can be raised or lowered along a smooth guide rail, allowing you to adjust it up to 120mm higher than its lowest position.
As a gaming monitor, the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG gaming monitor has several built-in features designed to improve your experience. Not only does it include features like TUV Flicker-Free and Low Blue Light, as well as supporting AMD FreeSync Premium and having G-Sync compatibility, but it also comes with the ASUS GamePlus suite, a tool co-developed alongside pro gamers designed to elevate your gaming.
It does this by allowing you to add a crosshair to the centre of the screen or use sniper mode to magnify a section of the screen, Giving you a reference for the centre of your screen and ensuring clean headshots from across the map, all without needing to run overlays.
With bright colours, dark shadows, crisp details, and smooth visuals, the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG gaming monitor delivers everything you need to elevate your gaming experience to new levels. It’s an exceptional monitor for gaming, but it also holds its own when it comes to editing content, and it certainly helps that it’s one of the more affordable gaming monitors on the market. Regardless of what you’ll use it for, the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG gaming monitor is worth the investment.
