I’ve played with a few gaming laptops since I started reviewing for MKAU Gaming, but nothing has excited me more than the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2025) G635 Gaming Laptop.
Rocking the signature ROG aesthetic, it looks and feels like a premium piece of gear from the moment you open the lid. Smooth matte panels are accentuated by the Aura Sync ROG Eye Logo, a dynamic AniMe Vision strip, and the RGB underglow circling the base of the unit thanks to a full-length Aura Sync light bar. The three-quarter-sized Chiclet keyboard adds another layer of lighting flair, offering per-key RGB customisation, while the trackpad hides a clever virtual number pad you can toggle at the touch of a button.
Available in several configurations, every version of the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2025) G635 Gaming Laptop is built around performance. All SKUs feature the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, which pushes up to 5.4GHz across 24 cores, but the one we received was their highest tier, coming with 32GB DDR5-5600 RAM, a 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD, and the incredible NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, with a whopping 24GB of GDDR7 VRAM, maxing out at 1647MHz with ROG Boost.
All that power needs a panel to match, and the 16-inch ROG Nebula HDR Display is easily one of the most stunning panels I’ve gamed on. With a 2.5K resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, and a 3ms response time, it’s fast, sharp, vibrant, and colour-accurate. Pantone validation ensures colour fidelity, while HDR 1000 certification gives highlights and shadows incredible depth. The anti-glare coating helped during daytime testing, and G-Sync compatibility was a huge help in keeping gameplay smooth when I pushed the visuals to the extreme.
I fired up Cyberpunk 2077, and for the first time on a laptop, I was able to crank everything to max. Path Tracing, DLSS on Quality, Frame Generation, and settings. It was all set as high as I could, and even with all the eye candy turned on, it maintained well over 150 FPS during an intense and prolonged session. The animations felt silky smooth, character models were crisp, and the lighting effects were absolutely cinematic. Seeing the in-game world reflect and bounce light in a natural, almost movie-like way was jaw-dropping, and more importantly, it stayed consistent the entire time.
Despite all that power, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2025) G635 Gaming Laptop stayed surprisingly quiet. ROG Intelligent Cooling deserves all the credit here, using an end-to-end vapour chamber, Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal, and a trio of fans to whisk away heat efficiently. Exhaust vents at the rear of the chassis helped keep the heat moving outwards, and the keyboard deck remained comfortably cool. Compared to other high-performance laptops I’ve used, this was a huge plus. It didn’t feel like I was typing on a stovetop after an hour of gameplay.
Connectivity is another strong point. The SCAR 16 comes stacked with I/O that would make some desktops feel under-equipped. On board, you’ll find three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports with 10Gbps transfer speeds, two Thunderbolt 5 ports with DisplayPort, Power Delivery, G-Sync, and 120Gbps transfer speeds, one HDMI 2.1 FRL, a 2.5G LAN port, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. Additionally, there’s a Wi-Fi 7 card, which comes with Bluetooth 5.4, so you can pretty much connect all of your existing peripherals.
Upgrading it is also refreshingly easy. ASUS has added a simple latch on the base of the laptop, allowing for quick removal of the bottom panel. Once inside, users can add a second M.2 SSD or upgrade the RAM to something faster or higher capacity down the line. It’s a small design choice that makes a big difference for longevity, especially if you like to tweak your gear over time.
The audio setup is also a lot better than I expected from a laptop as well, with a 4-speaker system backed by a smart amplifier, pumping out clear and surprisingly bassy audio, and an AI noise-cancelling microphone array isolates your voice for clear communications. There’s a solid 1080p webcam, which is great for streaming or meetings with colleagues, and it comes with Windows Hello IR support for easy and secure login.
ASUS’s software hub, Armoury Crate, remains intuitive and genuinely useful, letting you tweak RGB settings, configure AniMe Vision, monitor system stats, and control performance and cooling profiles all in one place.
From the moment I powered it on, I could tell that the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2025) G635 isn’t just another high-end gaming laptop. It’s a showcase of what modern portable gaming can truly be. The combination of the RTX 5090 GPU and Nebula HDR display delivered stunning, cinematic visuals with zero compromise, even in the most demanding games. Frame rates stayed high, the system stayed cool, and the experience never once felt like I was making trade-offs by choosing a laptop over a desktop.
