Samsung has been one of the biggest names in consumer storage for years, and the latest range of Samsung 9100 PRO PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD looks set to continue that trend. Available in capacities ranging from 1TB all the way up to 8TB, which we have reviewed previously, we’re now checking out the 4TB model, which still offers more than enough room for even the largest game libraries.
While PCIe 5.0 SSDs like the 9100 PRO won’t benefit every gamer equally, those running modern Gen5-compatible gaming PCs stand to gain the most, with the drive’s incredible throughput designed to minimise load times and keep pace with increasingly demanding AAA titles. Creative professionals working with large video projects, CAD, or 3D assets should also find plenty to appreciate.
Physically, there’s very little to distinguish the Samsung 9100 PRO PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD from any other M.2 drive. It uses the standard 2280 form factor, weighs just 9g, and installs with little more than a single screw. As always, it’s what’s hidden beneath the label that makes all the difference.
Powered by Samsung’s in-house PCIe 5.0 controller, Samsung V-NAND TLC flash memory, and 4GB of low-power LPDDR4X DRAM cache, the Samsung 9100 PRO PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD is rated for sequential read speeds of up to 14,800MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 13,400MB/s.
Random performance is equally impressive, reaching up to 2.2 million read IOPS and 2.6 million write IOPS, placing it firmly among the fastest consumer PCIe 5.0 SSDs currently available.
Of course, specifications only tell part of the story, and benchmark tests recorded sequential read speeds of 14,208MB/s, with sequential write speeds of 13,177MB/s. While those figures fall just short of Samsung’s quoted maximums, they’re close enough to demonstrate that the drive is delivering exactly the sort of flagship PCIe 5.0 performance it’s designed for.
More importantly, those speeds aren’t confined to benchmark charts. Large game installations complete in a fraction of the time, loading screens are kept to a minimum, and moving massive files barely gives you enough time to reach for a coffee.
Benchmark tests returned 8,715MB/s and 7,367MB/s in its 4K random read and write tests, highlighting the drive’s ability to rapidly access the countless smaller files that modern games, Windows, and creative applications rely on every second.
The 4TB capacity strikes a particularly nice balance. It’s large enough to comfortably house a growing library of modern AAA games alongside creative applications and active projects, without stepping into the premium territory occupied by the enormous 8TB model.
Whether you’re installing the latest blockbuster releases, editing 4K video, creating 3D assets, or simply trying to avoid uninstalling games every other week, there’s plenty of room to work with.
Performance is only half the story, though. Samsung has also focused heavily on efficiency, with the 9100 PRO built around an advanced 5nm controller architecture that significantly improves performance-per-watt compared to the previous generation.
A nickel-coated controller and integrated heat spreader help manage temperatures during sustained workloads, allowing the drive to maintain its impressive PCIe 5.0 performance while drawing surprisingly modest power for hardware of this calibre.
Samsung also includes support for AES 256-bit hardware encryption, TCG/Opal, and IEEE1667, alongside a five-year warranty and an endurance rating of up to 2,400TBW, providing plenty of confidence for long-term use.
Samsung’s Magician software continues to be one of the strongest software suites bundled with any consumer SSD. From firmware updates and drive health monitoring through to securely migrating data from an older drive, it provides a straightforward way to get the most from the 9100 PRO while helping ensure long-term reliability.
