Can you believe it’s been a face-melting 41 years since This Is Spinal Tap first spearheaded the rock documentary/mockumentary genre?! Thankfully, the wait is over, as Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues reignites the trio and brings back the tap! But questions can naturally arise, given the era of spinoffs, reboots, and delayed sequels to the 80s era movies: Can you recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle absurdity of the original? Does the comedy still work in this day and age? Although the original film launched the genre, with many others that have followed, can the sequel stand on its own like its predecessor?

Thankfully, there are a few off-the-cuff facts that will ease the “late sequel” curse. The first: the sequel is once again being helmed and directed by Rob Reiner, who also reprises his spoof-director character Marty DiBergi. The second: Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues is shot in that famous mockumentary deadpan style. The sequel finds the aging rockers attempting one more reunion tour, riddled with the same pitfalls, ego clashes, and wonderfully dumb misunderstandings that made them legends of satire.

When we last saw Spinal Tap, the boys had lost all hope: Their U.S. tour had been canned, and both their manager, Ian Faith, and lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel had stormed out and quit the band, after butting heads with lead singer David St. Hubbins’ girlfriend Jeanine (who ended up taking over managerial duties). However, after some out-of-nowhere luck in Japan, Spinal Tap was trending in the charts once again. With this news, Nigel returns to inform the band of their success and reunites with them for their seemingly last USA show before heading overseas!

Now, 41 years later, Marty embarks on a journey to discover where the band is now and reveals to them that they are STILL contractually obligated to do one final show. The overall narrative of the film is easy to digest and follow: the band is older, more out of touch, and still plagued by bizarre misfortune. Their amps still go to eleven, but what brings real volume to the movie is that there’s still a ton of good, belly-aching comedy mixed with heart.

The comedy lies less in constant one-liners and more in watching these characters wrestle with time, their legacy, and the music industry’s brutal shift (it has been 40 years). The similarly toned jokes, combined with deadpan reactions and perfectly timed cuts, still pack the same punch as they did in the original, but with a mix of updated gags about streaming platforms, influencers, and nostalgia tours. Some humour leans a little too much on recycled bits, but the script knows when to pull back and let awkward silences or confused looks carry the laugh.

Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer slip back into their roles like no time has passed. The chemistry is still magnetic: They can still play the perfect mix of part washed-up rockstars, part eternal fools. Their improvisation and comedic timing remain razor sharp, and even when a gag feels predictable, their delivery swerves the narrative and saves it. Cameos from modern musicians and comedians add a fun layer, poking at how the band’s influence both shaped and embarrassed future generations. If Ozzy Osbourne and Oasis believed that Spinal Tap was a real band, so will you, all over again!

As previously stated, the mockumentary format hasn’t aged or lost its appeal. If anything, it feels even more fitting in an era saturated with behind-the-scenes docs and reunion specials. The handheld cameras, awkward interviews, and faux-serious narration sell the illusion beautifully. What’s refreshing is the decision to lean into the passage of time, with the band dealing with real modern-day music in a generation of virtual excuses and videos, which makes the failures and tiny triumphs land harder.

The soundtrack is half parody, half legitimately catchy rock anthems. Just like the original, the three leads are actual musicians, having written and performed all songs in both the original and this sequel film. The new songs are gloriously dumb, with song titles like The Devil’s Just Not Getting Old, Cups and Cakes, and Rockin’ in the Urn, that nail that balance between laughable and toe-tapping. It shares the stage with their previous soundtrack hits Stonehenge, Gimme Some Money, and Big Bottom, which, for a rock/comedy album, 41 years apart, is an incredible feat in itself.

Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. It’s a lovingly chaotic encore. It’s self-aware, ridiculous, and surprisingly warm about aging, failure, and friendship. Fans of the original will feel right at home, though newcomers may miss some of the nostalgia that powers the laughs.

The Good

  • The original cast returns with their razor-sharp comedy, timing, and gags executed in a way as if no time had passed
  • New songs strike a great balance between parody and genuinely catchy rock
  • Clever commentary on aging, legacy, and the modern music industry
  • Strong cameos from contemporary musicians and comedians add flavour without stealing the spotlight

The Bad

  • A few jokes lean too heavily on recycled material from the first film
  • Some humour may go over the heads of newcomers unfamiliar with the original
  • The middle act drags slightly, with certain gags being a reliance more than a story beat
