Developer Roundtable – WWE 2K26 Preview

MKAU Gaming was invited by 2K to attend a developer roundtable for WWE 2K26, where the team shared an in-depth look at the title, including new gameplay features, match types, and roster details. The presentation highlighted 2K’s focus on expanding player choice, realism, and long-term engagement across all game modes.

WWE 2K26 will be available in multiple editions, as in previous years, each celebrating a distinct time or iconic figure in WWE history. The standard edition will feature CM Punk as the cover Superstar, which will be the second time we have seen him on the cover, while the King of Kings Edition, serving as a Deluxe Edition, will be headlined by none other than the game himself, Triple H.

Additional premium editions include the Attitude Era Edition, which pays tribute to one of the most legendary periods in WWE history and then the Monday Night War Edition, centrered around the history rivalry that defined an entire generation of WWE programming. Under the tagline “The Show Never Stops”, these editions collectively reflect the game’s focus on honouring WWE’s past while delivering an expansive modern experience.

This year’s showcase is none other than “The Best In The World”, CM Punk, allowing players to step into his boots and relive some of his career’s defining moments. In addition to recreating real-world matches, WWE 2K26 introduces “what-if” fantasy scenarios that explore matches that never happened due to timing or Punk’s departure from WWE. CM Punk himself will narrate the showcase, offering personal insights, commentary, and emotional context throughout the storyline, creating a more intimate and reflective experience.

2K has confirmed that WWE 2K26 will be the largest roster in the franchise’s history, with over 400 playable characters spanning from current superstars, legends, and a range of surprise additions.

Confirmed names so far include CM Punk, Triple H, Ray Fenix, Rusev, Izzy Dame, and Miles Bourne, and we’ve all said his name, and he has appeared. Joe Hendry is making his debut as a pre-order bonus. 2K have noted they’re not ready to open the bag up just yet, but it’s something we should be looking forward to with additional superstars being revealed closer to the launch.

We’re also seeing the introduction of the “Ringside Pass”, which is a progression system similar to a battle-pass model, but you’ll earn XP through gameplay to unlock new superstars, cosmetics, and additional content over time. While the details are being kept close to 2K’s chest, it’s a system designed to encourage ongoing play and reward long-term engagement, replacing the old DLC packs we are all used to.

WWE 2K26 is bringing in several new match types and some returning ones, designed to keep us interested and expand the variety and intensity the game offers. The first match is the “Inferno Match”, in which the ring is surrounded by flames, which heightens the spectacle and the danger. Second up is the “I Quit Match”, where you need to beat the absolute crap out of your opponent and force them to verbally say “I Quit” into a microphone.

We’re seeing the “Three Stages of Hell” match again, which is a gauntlet-style match where you face the same opponent across three different match types. We’re also seeing the addition of the “Dumpster Match”, which is much like the Ambulance and Casket match, where you need to beat the hell out of your opponent and put them into a dumpster to win the match. We’re also lucky enough to see Booker T and Wade Barrett being added to the commentary team, helping keep the presentation fresh, current and dynamic.

The Island is returning in WWE 2K26, continuing the storyline from WWE 2K26 following Roman Reigns departure as the Tribal Chief, which has created a power vacuum within WWE. Players will be able to align themselves with one of three new factions as we navigate the power struggle.

There have been significant gameplay enhancements to make matches feel more dynamic and immersive. Players can make use of expanded environmental weapons, including thumbtacks and shopping carts, while the introduction of stackable tables has got me so keen to put someone through them both. The developers have also revamped the reversal and stamina system, which has added greater realism and makes you think through some strategy.

These gameplay improvements are complemented well by expanded crowd interactions, surprise attacks, barricade systems, and enhanced ringside brawling. You can also change your pre-fight interactions, so instead of running straight into a springboard, you can shake hands or get the crowd more excited. There is also a new interactive entrance system being added, which will let you create a more personalised entrance, being able to trigger things like pyro, animations, and crowd interactions.

Some of the more pre-loved gamemodes have also received some love, expanding their depth and replayability. MyGM has been enhanced with more shows per season and more Superstars per match. There has also been expanded match type support and increased management challenges. MyRISE returns with a fresh overarching theme, introducing new storylines built around two division-based narratives, with players able to make heroic or villainous decisions that have a great long-term impact on the character’s journey. MyFACTION has also received some love from the developers, with more being released before release.

Needless to say, WWE 2K26 appears to be a substantial evolution in the series, with meaningful upgrades across nearly every game mode. From the CM Punk-focused showcase and record-breaking roster size to deeper customisation, new match styles, and expanded long-term progression systems. 2K is clearly aiming to deliver its most ambitious WWE title to date.
