Why Are Perks Such a Vital Part Of Leveling Up Your Gaming Experience?

There are many different types of perks when it comes to gaming. People will have an opinion on them one way or another, but all views are important and worth discussing. They can be vital in your gaming experience, turning what may have been somewhat of a slog into an exciting experience. So, why are they so important? Let’s find out.

Perks outside of gameplay

When talking about gaming perks that level up your experience, there is no better place to start than with perks that are effective outside of gameplay. This could be a bonus number of spins on an online slot machine, or an experience boost on a multiplayer game. These can give you a helping hand when you may be lagging behind the rest of the pack.

They can also be very useful in trying to retain different types of players; they will be much more likely to return if they know they have something waiting for them when they do. It also makes for a more active and engaging community, allowing players to discuss when and where a certain perk may be available. This level of communication helps breathe new life into a game.

 FPS-style perks

When talking about perks in conjunction with gaming, many people’s minds may immediately go to games such as those in the Call of Duty series. And for good reason – they have become so popular in the modern gaming scene that it’s no wonder that some people consider them the greatest.

Regardless of what people might think about the new Black Ops 7, its legacy is almost secure, although it could still be dragged as far as Activision is willing to go, and their title of godfather of the modern shooter is virtually set in stone.

Even when talking about Call of Duty, there are several different types of perks to discuss; the two main ones being those in multiplayer and those in the co-op Zombies mode.

Multiplayer perks can really give you the edge in a head-to-head fight. Your movement speed may be slightly increased, allowing you to get out of the line of fire in the nick of time. You also benefit from the ability to carry two primary weapons at once. When it comes to the correct combination of perks to have, there isn’t really a straightforward answer; it’s more down to preference. But you have multiple perk slots and dozens to choose from, so it is worth playing and finding out which ones work best for you.

Then, of course, we have the Zombies mode. This has its array of iconic perk machines, which take on a more whimsical approach, with them being represented as soda machines that play a little jingle when you purchase a drink. Although there have been many additions to the perks over the numerous entries, the core four of Juggernog, Quick Revive, Speed Cola and Double Tap are the most iconic and well known. These can fundamentally change the way the game works, and can easily make the difference between your early demise on a low round that will have you questioning your ability, to consistently reaching those high rounds.

 RPG perk systems

One of the other ways perks have been implemented in gaming is through role-playing games. These tend to work differently to those in Call of Duty, but are just as important. Typically, in a role-playing game, you will gain levels from doing quests and defeating foes. Within these levels, you will be able to pick different perks that will benefit your character in one way or another. These can work as small buffs, like extra damage on a weapon or a bit more health, and having them or not can make a big difference.

With that being said, some hardcore gamers have undertaken some extreme challenges that have proved that you technically don’t need perks in order to complete a game. They have shown this by beating some of the most soul-crushingly difficult games, such as Elden Ring, while purposely ignoring perks that would aid them with their adventure.

This shows that there is so much flexibility when it comes to perks in role-playing games; they make it so everyone can mold their own adventure and build their own character, or ignore them completely and participate in some of the most grueling challenges gaming has to offer.

Why have perks become so important?

But why have perks become so culturally relevant in the gaming industry? Why do you see them everywhere you look? Well, it’s rather simple; they can add much-needed flair to a video game that otherwise might not have been all that interesting. They allow for a lot of replayability, giving the player the opportunity to specialize in different skills on repeat play-throughs, making each one completely different.

What does the future hold?

The gaming industry has been going strong for a very long time, but it can be really tricky to predict trends within it, since, as an industry, it is entirely dependent on the technology sector as a whole. The gaming sector has proved itself to be incredibly adaptable, so I imagine it will continue to be, whatever the future of technology may bring. For now, I think it is safe to say that virtual reality will become the next big thing. It has been brewing for a while and is starting to show itself as potentially the next stride forward for the industry. But until then, gaming will continue to be the titan that it already is.
