In today’s modern-day gaming world, it’s almost a part of the course to try and revitalise or cash in on nostalgia by remastering or remaking old classic games, bringing a second life to them and allowing them to exist once more in the modern-day gaming world. Some classic remasters work; others give you the sense of ‘I really wish they didn’t touch this and left it alone’.

After 11 years, Croteam and developer, Devolver Digital, have gone through their catalogue and revived one of this generation’s most outstanding puzzle games: ‘The Talos Principle’.

Dubbing the new remaster with the ‘Reawakened’ nametag, thankfully we can happily report that what you may have loved and enjoyed (or are yet to experience) has remained the same, but has been built upon to make the game much smoother to play, living up to the definition of the term ‘Quality of life’.

‘The Talos Principle: Reawakened’ is a masterclass on how to properly remaster a beloved game. Croteam has taken the original’s thoughtful blend of philosophical storytelling and cerebral puzzle-solving and brought it back to life with modern flair—without losing the soul that made it special in the first place. The result is a stunning, immersive experience that feels just as profound today as it did upon its original release.

For those new to the Talos party, you play as an unnamed Android, who awakens in an unknown environment. A voice, known only as Elohim, guides you on your upcoming journey. You encounter various worlds that have played to some of the world’s most historic events (e.g. Ancient Greece, Egypt etc.). However, outside of these seeming simulations are what appears to be the real world.

As your Android systems begin to become self-aware, you will encounter various computer terminals that provide a history of Humanity, and how it was lost, and a mysterious AI program known as ‘Milton’ will begin to aid, or hinder, your progression. The game comes with its original DLC, “Road to Gehenna” and a new DLC, “In The Beginning”, showcasing the trials and events surrounding the leader of the “Talos Project”, Alexandra Drennan.

But, having said that, let’s now dive into the remastered features!

At the heart of Reawakened is the same rich network of environmental puzzles, but nearly every piece of the original has been returned and enhanced. The logic-testing challenges remain as satisfying/frustrating (in a good way) as ever, but there’s now a layer of polish and fluidity to interactions that wasn’t there before.

New features include: a reworked hint system that’s more instinctive, now providing puzzle-solving guidance without spoiling the solution or the looming story, and optional challenge modes that remix familiar puzzles with clever twists.

There’s also expanded accessibility support, including colourblind-friendly visuals and customizable input methods, which isn’t uncommon in today’s gaming world, but it does make this version far more inclusive than its predecessor.

Perhaps most impressive is the improved checkpoint system, allowing for more flexible experimentation without fear of being set back. Another system that has been remastered is that of the rewind/restart system. If you’ve gone too far in a puzzle and have changed something during

your problem-solving phase, but the change accidentally has affected the continued success of the puzzle, you can now rewind to a certain point in the puzzle or (if you want to rage quit and start over), you can restart the puzzle from scratch. This change alone makes Reawakened the definitive version for both newcomers and returning fans.

Controls have been rebuilt from the ground up, with gamepad/controller support now possessing improved precision and context-sensitive interactions that eliminate accidental inputs. Navigating intricate environments and manipulating puzzle elements like connectors, jammers, and recorders now feels much more sharp, alert, and seamless.

As our review copy was on PC, we can happily confirm that the keyboard and mouse setups still shine for those puzzle purists, especially with the previously mentioned customizable key bindings and increased response time. The UI has also been cleaned up and neater, allowing for faster navigation without sacrificing clarity.

Visually, Reawakened is a huge leap forward from its predecessor. Powered by updated rendering tech, the game now boasts real-time global illumination, enhanced volumetric lighting, and dramatically improved textures. Each biome (a.k.a. worlds that host the puzzles) feels incredibly more immersive, to which one may argue that it is borderline alive!

As I’ve stated in previous reviews: “The Devil is in the Detail”. As such, environmental details such as grass/bushes moving in the wind, water reflections, and dynamic weather effects add a sense of presence and further realism to the story. Even the terminals, which previously were just text boxes, now feel integrated into the world with ambient animations and interactive flair.

The audio overhaul in Reawakened is nothing short of exceptional. Music has been remastered with a fuller, more nuanced soundstage, blending ambient electronica and neoclassical tones to reflect the game’s existential themes. Tracks transition smoothly between puzzle-solving serenity and moments of narrative revelation, perfectly matching the pace and mood. Gone are the days of the soundtrack either cutting out or distracting you/removing you from the immersion of the game. If Reawakened were ever to release a soundtrack to the game, it would be the most positive/motivational tribute to your ears in the last 10 years.

Audible dialogue seems to have also been upgraded, possibly re-recorded, as it now sounds quite crisp and clear, helping to reinforce the emotional moments of the evolving story.

The Talos Principle: Reawakened is more than just a visual upgrade, it’s a loving reimagining of a game that dared to ask big questions. It’s a remaster that respects the original while offering meaningful enhancements across the board. Whether you’re exploring its philosophical depths for the first time or revisiting its puzzles with fresh eyes, Reawakened delivers a deeply rewarding and beautifully modernized experience.
