Another Fisherman’s Tale (PS VR2) – Review

Thanks to the team that brought us the award-winning game, A Fisherman’s Tale, we are off on another mind-bending VR puzzle adventure in Another Fisherman’s Tale for PS VR2, developed by InnerspaceVR, and Published by Vertigo Games.

Immerse yourself in poetic storytelling as you explore new mind-bending VR puzzle mechanics, solve puzzles using your own body, detach and control your limbs, and find new attachments to progress. Discover the truth about Bob’s past as you journey through beautiful and unique locations. Get ready for a captivating VR experience unlike any other.

This is such a beautifully crafted, whimsical, yet sombre story of Bob’s past, told as Nina is packing away her parents’ basement, recalling her Father’s adventures told to her as a child, delivered in such a powerful way that was truly captivating and very reflective of my own adventures as a parent. Each chapter of our adventure is represented by wonderful set-piece dioramas, which also serve as the world in which we will be puzzling our way through and exploring.

Each of the levels in Another Fisherman’s Tale is played as a wooden Bob, and Bob is going to need a few things to make it through. Bob has a variety of different parts which you will use to solve each of the puzzles, such as a regular hand that you can eject and have to crawl around to get to some of those out-of-the-way places.

A crab claw is used for cutting, a pirate’s hook will help you to get around, and even a fishtail can be used for swimming, just to name a few. Where things get really interesting is when you just can’t see what you need to do. Simply popping Bob’s head clean off will give you some much-needed perspective.

This mechanic, while very handy, is also home to my only gripe about the game. Being in the headless state you can still move your body around separately and even eject your hand, which can also move around while detached. Moving around like this can be quite cumbersome and awkward, though, with a little practice, you do get more fluent. The puzzles themselves aren’t overly complicated though they will still require a reasonable amount of thought.

The highlight for me here with the visuals would have to be just how well this game managed to complement such a great story. Each of the set piece dioramas made me feel as if they were telling their own story of being lovingly crafted.

My favourite level, swimming around in the fish tank diorama, not only made me feel incredibly small, but also gave off a great deal of awe, especially when looking up out of the water and seeing the books overhead on the shelf. Even down to the way the light would reflect off of a cup I was holding looked awesome. What can I say? I’m a fan of the small details.

Experiencing the highs and lows of this adventure is tied together beautifully with the game’s soundtrack, offering the perfect fit to the overall aesthetic. Even if I were to take away the music for a moment, I honestly could have drifted away for hours just listening to the soundscape of the oceans.

Another Fisherman’s Tale is a unique puzzle game that tells an incredibly captivating story of adventures past, whilst also forging your own. It’s full of wonderfully crafted set pieces and levels, and puzzles that will keep you thinking, and though moving your body around without your head can be a little problematic to begin with, it doesn’t take much away from the total package at all. Another Fisherman’s Tale is a must-play experience for any PS VR2 player. Hopefully, Nina’s journey is far from over and there is more to come.
