B.I.O.T.A. – Review

Developed by Small Bros, B.I.O.T.A is a 2D, metroidvania action-packed game. The game is based in the 22nd Century when a meteorite came down to earth and scientists discovered a new element called Viridium, which was the key to interplanetary travel. This made mining companies compete to set up mining settlements all over the solar system. Soon after, a company called “V Corp” took over 65% of the known Viridium Fields which then takes us to the year 2177.

Eventually, One of V-Corps mines on the asteroid known as the ‘Frontier Horizon’ becomes contaminated by a biological organism known as ‘The Agent’ that takes over the ecosystem on the asteroid. V-Corp sends a team of scientists to investigate the asteroid but there was no sign of life… in comes the infamous ‘Gemini 2 Squad’. This elite force consists of 8 mercenaries with all different unique skills & weapons are sent to find out what happened on Frontier Horizon.

B.I.O.T.A is a 2D masterpiece bringing enjoyable, reminiscent Gameboy feelings. I definitely enjoyed the side-scrolling kickback feel. You can either use a keyboard or controller with this game as they are both supported which is a key feature for a lot of people in gaming communities. Being able to switch between these mercenaries is definitely a key feature of the gameplay as you fight your way through swarms of enemy creatures and platform through each level.

When you progress into the game you learn to use a multitude of guns and various different crafts including a mech, submarine, and even a starship. The beautifully set UI lets you see progress on where you are in the level with the likes of how much Viridium you have found or your completion. If you are chasing that 100% completion rate you also have the option to speed run the levels, if so inclined.

This title’s graphics take the old school, 2D approach yet it’s so simple but so beautiful. The color schemes on each level keep you interested in what’s going to be next & the background keeps itself separate from the actual platforms which is easy on the eyes. You also have the option to change the colour palette anytime during the game which can change the game’s 8-bit visuals.

B.I.O.T.A has a fast-paced soundtrack too that makes you want to shoot your way through all the levels and makes you feel like a total badass merc. The soundtrack keeps fast-paced during the actual missions and slows down whilst on the menu or on the mine camps.

This indie game is really enjoyable for anyone interested in 2D side scrollers with a bad-ass soundtrack & the want to obliterate some space scum.
