Battle Train (Steam) – Review

What do you get when you mash together a rogue-lite deck-builder, customisable trains armed to the teeth with explosives, and a cartoon-style game show? You get Battle Train — an imaginative, chaotic ride that feels like Total Drama Island met Slay the Spire. Developed by Terrible Posture Games and published by Bandai Namco, Battle Train is surely here to derail everything in the best way possible.

Set within a game show, Battle Train throws you into the shoes of eager contestants competing to blow up enemy bases with over-the-top locomotives. The show-within-a-game format is elevated by genuinely entertaining voice acting, flashy narrative animations, and a visual flair reminiscent of Cartoon Network’s golden age. It’s zany, self-aware, and loaded with charm. The core gameplay is a clever twist on the roguelike formula.

You’ll build a deck from cards representing tracks, explosives, lasers, and utilities — all powered by a resource called Minerals, which are harvested by strategically navigating the battlefield. Each turn, you lay tracks to push your weaponised trains toward enemy bases while trying to fend off their oncoming steel. And just to keep you sweating, the enemy can use your tracks against you.

Each run is packed with decisions: which path to follow, which cards to upgrade, how to customise your train, and how to survive long enough to reach the next part of the story. That last part is important because story progression is tied to specific nodes on the map.

If you don’t hit enough of those, you’ll be booted back to the start — no matter how well you’re doing otherwise. It’s a bold design choice that can make the game’s pacing feel uneven or artificially stretched.

The roguelike loop features multiple playable contestants with unique decks and personalities. Over time, you’ll find favourites; though the game throws so much card variety at you, experimentation is part of the fun. Customisation is where Battle Train shines — successful runs unlock absurdly powerful train modules that can turn your railgun-riding clown car into a base-destroying juggernaut.

Beyond combat, minigames and puzzles reward clever play with powerful new cards, further mixing up each run. The blend of combat, exploration, and side content creates a satisfying, sometimes chaotic, structure favouring creativity and replayability.

While Battle Train has a lot going for it, its run-based structure comes with typical genre caveats: occasional grind, repetition, and the frustration of a great run cut short by an arbitrary gate. But those are forgivable in light of its bold identity, punchy writing, and sheer creative energy.

The sound design of Bullet Train is reminiscent of a high-energy game show, complete with over-the-top cues, exaggerated transitions, and upbeat background tracks that keep the momentum rolling. This is layered with the explosive chaos of combat—booming blasts, clanking metal, and the destruction of outposts—all of which heighten the sense of intensity and urgency.

The audio design doesn’t just support the action; it amplifies it, making every moment feel like you’re performing for an audience in a televised warzone. Complementing this is the stellar voice acting, which brings each character to life with personality and flair. The performances are consistently sharp, adding charm and narrative punch to the overall experience.

Battle Train is an off-the-rail mashup of strategy, chaos, and animated flair. Its roguelike structure may deter some players, but the unique mechanics, customisation depth, and cartoonish insanity make this one an unforgettable ride.
