BFF or Die – Review

“BFF or Die” is a multiplayer puzzle game where players are forced by necessity to work together…OR DIE! This fantastic throwback co-op is brought to us by the developers at 2Awesome Studio and, despite the brutality of the name, is as fun as it is family-friendly. Grab some friends, grab some snacks and drinks, and get into this team-based puzzle solver!

Players in BFF or Die take control of a race of time traveling aliens who are on a rescue mission to save Earth. They flick through various points in time with notable periods depicted by the enemies and mazes. Players then help each other through these mazes, become and work together like BFFs to make sure they survive the day!

The game designers for BFF or Die truly believe in the idea of gaming having the potential to be the social glue that can solidify long-lasting friendships. Well, I guess it’s not too hard to guess where the concept of working together came from! Not only do I agree with them, but I believe that this type of game, so reminiscent of old school party games and yet so dependent on teamwork, is the perfect social lubrication for a party with either old friends or new acquaintances.

Sure, you can play BFF or Die as a single player if you wish, however that means that you have to do both jobs yourself, such as lighting the way with the right stick whilst traversing with the left. This doesn’t sound too complex but as you move through the different levels, you gain the use of more gadgets that you must use to get through a level. If nothing else, you’re bound to improve your hand-eye coordination.

The graphics are good enough. By that, I mean they aren’t the greatest thing I’ve ever seen, but they perfectly suit the environment that they’ve been designed for. BFF or Die would suit both a family or a group of friends just looking to have some fun. The adorable aliens give me a feel of Deadmaus crossed with Human Fall Flat. Great for the giggles.

The only thing I wish was a little different is the music. Sound effects, like the graphics, suited the game just fine- however, the music could have been more upbeat, a slightly higher BPM would have given this game that little extra kick for the party crowd.

Overall, I enjoyed the game. It was fun as well as thought-provoking. The maps, to begin with, were simple enough, and gave me a chance to understand the basic controls, getting only slightly harder each round. Personally, I don’t see anyone putting more than a few hours into this bad boy, not unless you’re really having a party when playing it- in which case it’s definitely worth the laughs when trying to work together. Would highly recommend BFF or Die if you’re looking for a smile.
