Darwin’s Paradox does not ease you in; it throws you straight into the strange, unsettling situation and lets curiosity do the rest. There’s an immediate hook that makes you want to see how far the experience will push its concept and whether it can sustain that intrigue beyond its opening moments.

It’s the sort of game that leans on atmosphere and identity right from the start, setting expectations for something a little different to something we’re used to. Developed by ZDT Studio and published by KONAMI, Darwin’s Paradox arrives with a clean sense of intent.

You are following the adventures of Darwin the Octopus, which feels like it’s been pulled straight from an animated film. Darwin is pulled from the calm depths of his life in the ocean by a strange-looking beam, which one could assume was a UFO, and thrown into a dark, mysterious industrial world, which it is your job to navigate.

You are thrown into a junkyard overshadowed by a massive industrial factory, and from there you need to navigate the dangerous environment using unique abilities, overcome traps, and solve some awesome puzzles.

Gameplay in Darwin’s Paradox is where the game really shines, blending performance, puzzles and creative problem-solving into a constantly evolving experience that makes you not want to put the game down.

The game encourages you to experiment with Darwin’s wide range of abilities rather than just relying on one at a time. You can swim, run, jump, climb, and squeeze and hide and also interact with items with your tentacles, all of which feel smooth and intuitive.

I really liked that the game would introduce new mechanics over time, like camouflage, ink shooting, manipulating the environment, and a few others, which you can discover along the way.

The environments themselves play a huge role as well, with elements like air vents, electrical systems, and that radioactive, green, glowing goop that adds an extra thought process to what you are doing. Combined with the cinematic cartoon-inspired presentation and moments of humour woven into the gameplay, it creates an experience I really enjoyed.

The controls felt tight and responsive, which is exactly what you want from a game that relies heavily on the movement and precision aspect. Guiding Darwin around was smooth and intuitive, whether you’re swimming through tight spaces or navigating more complex platforming sections. His unique abilities, like camouflage, were easy to pick up but still offer enough depth to keep things interesting as you progress through the game.

I really liked the sound design in Darwin’s Paradox, as it was super minimalistic, but it worked incredibly well for the style of the game. Rather than overwhelming you, it leans into a subtle environmental audio that brings the entire package to life. From the soft, slopping sounds of Darwin moving around to the rattling, overheated hoses and machinery, every detail added to the atmosphere.

Even the footsteps of those cool-looking robotic enemies have their own distinct presence. It created this active, immersive world without needing much to make it that way.

The one sound I didn’t like, just cause it sounded weird, was when Darwin got squashed, but it was not a deal breaker by any means, just meant you needed to be careful.

I was genuinely surprised by how clean and polished the visuals were. It leans heavily into that vibrant, cartoon-inspired art style but still manages to carry a sense of realism that really brought the entire thing to life.

The lighting was particularly impressive, casting soft, natural shadows and some subtle reflections that added some depth to the game. The character models and environments were crisp and detailed, making each area feel thoughtfully crafted. All these elements came together to create a visually stunning and engaging experience that made that game consistently enjoyable to look at whilst playing, and you were constantly looking around to see what else you could spot.

Darwin’s Paradox is one of those rare games that feels super confident in every aspect of what it’s trying to do, delivering a unique, polished and genuinely memorable experience from start to finish. It blends creative gameplay, a strong visual identity, and an immersive atmosphere into something that stands out in a crowded space.

It never felt repetitive or uninspired. The constant introduction of new mechanics, paired with tight controls and thoughtful level design, keeps things fresh throughout. It’s a game that knows exactly what it wants to be and executes that vision flawlessly, which is why it’s my first 10/10 game of the year.
