DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part Two – Review

DOOM Eternal was by far easily my game of the year last year. It was fun, challenging, and came jam-packed with so many enemies to Rip and Tear, but that’s now come to an end with the release of the second and final DLC, The Ancient Gods: Part Two.

The Ancient Gods: Part Two picks up directly where The Ancient Gods: Part One ended. The Doom Slayer has revived the Dark Lord and it is now time to finish this epic conclusion to the DOOM Slayer’s Saga, and that makes me upset. I’ve had so much fun with DOOM Eternal. Sure it can be VERY challenging, but once you get through a level, you’re left with such satisfaction. Well, that and some very sore hands and watery eyes from all the controller gripping and full focus mode, so don’t go into this DLC thinking it gets easier, it doesn’t.

The Ancient Gods: Part Two is challenging. From the moment you drop in, you’re going to take a beating. I played on Normal and even had to go back and check I didn’t select Ultra Nightmare by accident. Part Two is definitely a step up in the difficulty department compared to Part One and the main original campaign.

When it comes to combat, the biggest addition is the new Sentinel Hammer. Once it’s charged up, you use it by smashing the ground which in turn stuns everything around you. It comes in handy and is a must for certain enemy types giving you a few seconds to lay into them while they are dazed and confused.

While we are on the topic of enemies, The Ancient Gods: Part Two has a few new enemy types to keep you busy. First off are Barons, these guys can get annoying real fast as they have regenerating armor. Next up are IMP’s which can only be killed with the auto-shotgun attachment. There are also demons that scream and buff any enemies around them making your already challenging fight even harder. Talking about annoying, there are now even demons that can poison you which stops you from being able to dash. The only way to remove this is to glory punch them to death.

Level design in the DOOM series has always been top-notch, and that is not different in The Ancient Gods: Part Two. Platforming plays a big part in how you navigate through the levels and one big addition this time are the grapple hook points floating around. These points can be used by pulling out your Super Shotgun grapple attachment and before you know it you’re swinging around like Spiderman.

And there you have it, folks. All in all, DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part Two is a perfect way to see the series out. It’s the whole package. Breathtaking graphics, satisfying platforming, and of course, EPIC music while slaying demons.
