When it comes to speed, style, and sheer spectacle, few franchises carry the same weight as Fast & Furious. With its over-the-top action, globe-trotting adventures, and love for family-fueled chaos, it was only a matter of time before the series found its way back to the arcade racing scene.

Developed by Cradle Games and published by GameMill Entertainment, Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition aims to recapture the adrenaline rush, blending cinematic pieces, wild customisation and its speed thrills. It’s not about realism or restraint, it’s about nitrous, neon, and never lifting off the accelerator. But does the latest entry deliver a worthy ride for fans, or does it stall out before the finish?

Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition brings the thrill of the blockbuster franchise to life with high-octane races across stunning global locations. You can tear through tracks set in the Swiss Alps, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Havana, Yellowstone, and Colombia, each packed with mental twists and turns and insane jumps. You can choose between single race mode for solo adrenaline runs or split-screen two-player mode for those head-to-head battles with friends or family.

If you are a little more competitive, you can climb your way up a global leaderboard, which does not seem to be a hard task at its current state. There is a somewhat impressive lineup of cars with the Ford Bronco DR, Shelby Mustang GT500KR, Corvette Z06, Ford GT, 1970 Dodge Charger, 1963 Corvette Grand Sport, 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500, and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, letting players experience a decent collection of vehicles but would have been nice to see some more JDM in that lineup for us original Fast & Furious fans.

When it comes to controls, Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition feels like a game originally designed with smartphones in mind. The steering is incredibly snappy and sensitive, making it feel more like a mobile racer than a console experience. Using a controller, I often found myself flicking the analog stick to nail tight corners instead of smoothly steering, just to avoid jackknifing into the other cars. While it’s responsive, the precision just isn’t quite there.

The game could have benefited from some extra optimisation for console play to make it all feel a little more natural, while still maintaining that arcade feel. Interestingly, breaking was unnecessary in this game; you could hold down the accelerator and just send it from start to finish, which, whilst fun in short bursts, made the racing feel shallow. All you needed to do was steer with the left analog stick, pull back on the right trigger and press A to hit the nitrous or pop those iconic wheelies.

The sound design in Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition doesn’t significantly enhance the experience. The car sounds are extremely generic, with every engine blending together to a certain extent and utilising the same sound file, characterised by a dull roar that lacks the distinctive tone or power you’d expect from iconic vehicles like a Dodge Charger or a Ford GT. The music, on the other hand, hits like a warehouse rave, blaring with heavy beats that feel somewhat disconnected from the racing vibe.

While it brings some energy at first, it quickly becomes repetitive and annoying due to its short looping tracks, which restart before you can even settle into the race properly. Even with a few different loops thrown in, it ultimately feels uninspired and poorly balanced, leaving you wishing for more variety and a sound that actually matches the intensity and style of the Fast & Furious name.

Visually, the game is a mixed bag. I was genuinely surprised by the quality of the car models; they’re detailed enough to stand out and capture the essence of each vehicle. However, everything else around them really let the game down. The environments, lighting and effects all look like something made for mobile, lacking the polish and realism you’d expect from a console release.

Even the cars themselves, while well-modelled, have a cartoonish sheen that clashes with the game’s attempts at realism. It ends up sitting awkwardly in the middle, being half cartoonish and half-baked in realism, leaving the visuals feeling inconsistent and unfinished. With more time and effort spent on refining the graphics, this could have looked far more cohesive and immersive.

Fast & Furious: Arcade Edition had the potential to be a fun, over-the-top racer that embraced the chaos and flair from the film series it’s known for. Unfortunately, what we get instead feels like a mobile port with a coat of paint. While the car lineups and locations are a solid nod, everything else, from the controls to the sounds and visuals, feels rushed and unrefined.

The game nails a sense of speed and simplicity, making it an easy-to-pick-up and play experience, but it lacks the depth, polish, and excitement needed to keep players coming back for more. Fans of the series might get a short burst of nostalgia, but anyone looking for a truly engaging arcade racer will be let down.
