Flow Studio from Brisbane, Australia, brought their debut game, Len’s Island, to Steam Early Access in November 2021. As of June 19, 2025, it has released update 1.0 and left Early Access. Published in partnership with Fireshine Games, known for titles such as Core Keeper, Shadows of Doubt, Sniper Elite: Resistance and the First Berserker: Khazan, just to name a few. With such a strong back catalogue, you can see they must have some faith in Len’s Island.

An isometric style survival with procedurally generated worlds. The game has similarities to RuneScape Dragonwilds, people have stated, but as you are aware, by the release date, that is more of a comparison in reverse. You are Len, you travel to an island to help rebuild and further development of the remaining villages overcome from the void enemies.

These are ancient human races that were struck by a meteor, causing a Lightstone resource, but upon gathering this resource, they found themselves contaminated. There is an introduction video to the game, which is also a new feature, as a common complaint during Early Access was the narrative.

Len’s Island can be played solo or up to seven extra players cooperatively, which is new in the recent 1.0 update released. You can keep your world progress separate from your character progress.

This means when joining servers, you can carry your character progression, but your world progression is furthered by being active in there, along with new features such as a reworked skill tree, new weapons, enemies, and a new final act and boss. However, there have been numerous additional changes, too numerous to list.

Like any survival game, it begins with limited tools and resources. You have a checklist tutorial system to help guide you through the basics of playing Len’s Island, from collecting wood and stone, building your first home, and taking on your first dungeons. The dungeon system requires you to activate shrine stones on the N, E, S and W of the maps and then enter.

Graphically vibrant and pleasing, with great lighting and shadow effects. With great responses to your impact on the world, for example, taking a tree down can cause a domino effect and take down other trees in the process.

Controls are easy to pick up, but I have encountered some issues when attacking enemies and determining the correct direction to cause damage. I found that I was swinging and missing more than I would like. But overall, it’s easy to pick up and manageable. Building is a significant part of these games, and I feel Flow Studio has made a great effort to make it easy to build, while offering the opportunity to create large and eye-catching premises, ranging from cozy cabins to castle-like estates.

The audio is clear and well-suited to the game’s aesthetics. Most games in this genre feature music queues for specific areas and tasks, but there are quite a lot of them. I find this intentional in making you feel alone in your task and testing your resolve.

Overall, I enjoy Len’s Island, and the people at Flow Studio have done a great job with their debut title. With the update released, it is clear that they have listened to their community. I would recommend it to all survival fans, but with a genre so overpopulated, I fear Len’s Island may fall to the wayside. I do not want this to happen, but the industry can be brutal and competitive. With its great visuals and longevity in the grind for progress, it has what it takes. Just remember, no shoes!
