Wizards of the Coast has once again redefined the boundaries of the Magic: The Gathering universe with their latest set, Edge of Eternities. This bold new expansion launches players into the uncharted Sothera system, which is a region beyond the multiverse, on the brink of the Blind Enternites.
Blending high-concept science fiction with classic Magic fantasy, Edge of Eternities introduces interstellar warface, cosmic relics and a crew of desperate scrappers caught in a galaxy-spanning conflict. With brand-new mechanics, vibrant space-themed artwork and an ambitious narrative that’s unlike anything we’ve seen from Magic: The Gathering.
Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities adheres to the core rules of the traditional MTG but boldly expands its gameplay. In limited formats like Sealed and Draft, players construct decks from boosters teeming with alien lifeforms, interstellar artifacts and volatile magic sourced from the far-off Sothera system.
The set introduces a set of fresh mechanics that elevate the strategic depth and player choice, including Warp, which allows cards to be cast in alternate modes; Void, which triggers effects from permanent leave the battlefield; and Lander tokens, a clever new resource system that opens up creative mana strategies.
These mechanics enhance risk versus reward decision-making and create a layered synergy between the set’s various spacefaring factions, whether you’re readying a scrapper crew, channelling raw power from the Blind Enternities, or siding with fantastical zealots, Edge of Eternities rewards adaptive gameplay and clear exploration of its intricate mechanics.
MKAU Gaming was lucky enough to be sent the Edge of Eternities Bundle Pack, which offers nine Edge of Eternities Play Boosters, each packed with 14 cards and at least one guaranteed foil per pack. This ensures a rich experience for both gameplay and collection, with plenty of variety and potential for multiple rares or mythics in a single pack. In addition, the bundle includes a striking foil promo card featuring exclusive alternate art, which is an attractive addition for collectors.
If you look beyond the boosters, the bundle provides 30 basic lands, 15 foil and 15 non-foil, with five of each featuring a stunning borderless full-art treatment that brings the sci-fi landscapes of Sothera to life. You also score yourself an oversized spindown life counter, a themed deck box and two reference cards. For the purpose of the review, we were also sent six additional Play Boosters, three Collector Boosters and one of the set’s Commander Decks to help explore a broader range of gameplay.
The extra boosters gave us a better sense of the limited environment and card variety, whilst the Collector Boosters highlighted the premium foil treatments and alternate-art variants available in the set, perfect for collectors seeking that eye-catching addition to their deck.
The Commander deck, meanwhile, provided a polished, ready-to-play multiplayer experience and served as a great showcase for how the new mechanics translate to the broader, more strategic format.
While the bundle excels in value and variety, it’s worth noting that this product isn’t aimed at high-end collectors seeking guaranteed premium cards. Unlike Collector Boosters, this bundle doesn’t include showcase foils, etched variants, or multiple mythics per pack.
However, for the price point typically around the $80 AUD, it delivers excellent bang for buck, especially for players who want to enjoy the set’s flavour and play a little more casually or build their collection. The Commander Deck comes in at a great price point of $99 AUD, which is a ready-to-play experience if you are new to Magic: The Gathering or want to jump straight into the action.
Edge of Eternities is a bold and refreshing leap for Magic: The Gathering, seamlessly blending science fiction themes with the strategic complexity that fans know and love. From its vivid art direction and innovative mechanics to the depth of interstellar lore, the set stands out as one of the most ambitious releases in recent times.
Huge thanks to Wizards of the Coast for sending us this amazing care package. They have crafted an experience that feels both fresh and familiar, offering something compelling for casual players, seasoned veterans and collectors alike.
