There’s something undeniably special about classic motorsports. It was long before modern electronics, advanced aerodynamics and all the driver assists we see in motorsports today. Racing back then was all about raw power, mechanical grip and the skill required to tame the machines that constantly demanded your full attention when you were behind the wheel. It was the era when each lap was unpredictable, every corner required commitment, and every mistake could make or break the race.

Developed by Straight4 Studios and published by GIANTS Software, the “GT Icons Pack” for Project Motor Racing looks to celebrate that golden age of racing by bringing players back to a time when driving talent mattered. Rather than simply adding more cars to the roster, this latest DLC aims to capture the spirit of vintage GT racing, offering an experience that embraces the challenge, character and excitement that made these legendary machines something we will remember forever.

Jumping into the driver’s seat on the GT Icons Pack, the first thing that stood out to me was how different every class felt to drive. This wasn’t just one of those DLC packs where each car feels like a slight variation of the others. The GT Icons Pack introduces nine legendary race cars, split into three distinct classes, each representing a different chapter in the history of GT and sports car racing. Rather than simply throwing together a collection of classic cars, the pack has been designed so that each class delivers a unique driving experience and captures the philosophy of the era it represents.

The GT 70 class is centred around the famous “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday” mentality that defined the racing industry in the 1970s. We found manufacturers building homologation specials that looked closely related to the cars you would see sitting in your local dealerships, but underneath were purpose-built race cars designed to win. Featuring the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0, Chevrolet Corvette C3, and Ford Capri RS3100, the cars all struck a balance between power and precision.

I found this class the easiest of the three to jump into, but these cars still demanded that level of respect on the track. You learn quickly that you can’t just jump in and drive them all the same, like a bull in a china shop. The Porsche rewarded those smooth, precise inputs, while the Corvette and Capri required a little more patience between putting your foot down.

The Sports Car 67 class couldn’t feel more different. This class was built around prototype racing at what I would describe as its wildest phase. This class featured iconic cars like the Ford GT40 Mk IV, Chaparral 2F and the Lola T70 Mk 3. You will find one similarity among the three cars: all three were designed with one goal in mind: speed.

They’re brutal, fast, loud, and constantly feel like they’re on the edge of losing control with what we would now call primitive aerodynamics and a massive V8 powerplant. Every lap keeps you focused because one wrong move normally means you’re facing the wrong direction. Once you tamed the beasts, driving them became a fun experience, but they’re still not a vehicle you will ever fully understand.

Finally, there’s the GT 60 class, which quickly became my favourite class. Featuring absolute gems like the Shelby Daytona Coupe, Jaguar E-Type Lightweight and the Corvette Grand Sport, these lightweight race cars were stripped back to the bare basics. These cars didn’t rely on downforce or modern technology; instead, they rewarded you with smoother steering, careful throttle control and confidence to let the car move underneath you.

The rear end was always on the verge of stepping out and giving you a wake-up call, but for me, it made the cars that little bit more fun to drive. The cars always felt like they were encouraging you to find the limit, and once I stopped trying to drive them like modern cars, they became an absolute joy to drive.

Rounding out the GT Icons DLC is Rocky Knoll Raceway, an American road course that feels as if it were specially designed with these classic machines in mind. It has an enjoyable mix of flowing corners, heavy braking zones and some great elevation changes. The GT 70 cars felt incredibly balanced through the fast sections, the Sports Car 67 prototypes absolutely flew down the straights, while the GT 60 cars kept me busy wrestling for grip through the technical areas. It became a perfect track to showcase the GT Icons Pack and what it has to offer.

The GT Icons Pack is exactly what a good DLC should be. Rather than adding more cars to increase the vehicle roster, Straight4 Studios has delivered a collection that genuinely feels unique. Every class has its own unique identity, each car demands a different approach, and the Rocky Knoll Raceway provides the perfect playground to experience them all. The DLC captures an era of motorsports where talent behind the wheel mattered more than technology.

Regardless of whether you’re a long-time fan of classic GT racing or simply looking for a fresh challenge in Project Motor Racing, the GT Icons Pack is well worth picking up. It successfully celebrates some of motorsport’s most iconic machines while delivering rewarding, engaging and authentic racing that keeps you coming back for one more lap.
