As much as I enjoy tinkering around with computers, dealing with cables is one of the most time-consuming and frustrating aspects of the process. Before receiving the TUF Gaming 1000W Gold White Edition PSU as part of the benchmark PC ASUS generously helped us build, I had only ever dealt with power supplies where every cable was bundled together.
Once the ROG Strix Z790-A Gaming WiFi II Motherboard, ROG Strix LC III 360 AIO Cooler, and an ROG Strix Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 OC Edition GPU had been installed into the white TUF Gaming GT302 ARGB case, connecting the power supply was a breeze. Pulling out and making room for our latest review was even easier.
By utilising a modular design, the ASUS ROG Strix 1000W Platinum White Edition power supply adopts the “Easy to DIY” mantra, changing how we think about power supplies. Rather than having a bundle of cables poking out the back, each component has a corresponding socket on the back of the PSU, with slots dedicated to the motherboard, peripherals and SATA devices, and CPU and PCIe slots.
These and the related cables are marked, taking the guesswork out of plugging it all in. The etched cables are also extremely pliable, making routing to your chosen components a whole load easier.
It’s not just about being easy to install, however. The ASUS ROG Strix 1000W Platinum White Edition power supply is packed with premium components and engineered to be ready for anything. One of the PCIe connections is a 12V-2X6 port with the patented-intelligent voltage stabiliser (IVS). Using this ATX 3.1 capable port with a PCIe Gen 5.1 graphics card, “GPU-First” voltage sensing prioritises the voltage delivered to your GPU by up to 45%, providing the power required for a more consistent high-end gaming experience.
It features a very aggressive design, as one would expect from Republic of Gamers, but is somewhat let down by the lack of RGB elements. While not overly important and certainly not detrimental to its performance, I feel there are some areas where this could have been very eye-catching, such as the sides where some lettering has been cut out and backed with a mirror-like finish. Instead, they’ve included coloured metallic stickers that you can use to add some extra flair, and I’m not sure how I feel about those.
Much like the ROG THOR 1600W Titanium III I reviewed in April, the ASUS ROG Strix 1000W Platinum White Edition power supply features OPP/OVP/UVP/SCP/OCP/OTP protection and an 80Plus Platinum efficiency rating, achieved by utilising low-ESR capacitors and GaN MOSFETs.
Aside from increasing the ASUS ROG Strix 1000W Platinum White Edition power supply’s energy efficiency, these components are smaller, allowing for a more optimised component layout. As a result, larger ROG Heatsinks could be installed, improving heat dissipation so effectively that the PSU fan doesn’t kick in until the load exceeds 40%. This has earned ASUS the Cybenetics Lambda A+ Certification, with the fan typically emitting less than 20dB of sound and, even then, barely over 30dB under full load.
Style, modularity, and performance. The ASUS ROG Strix 1000W Platinum White Edition PSU checks every box. “GPU-First” boosts power delivery when your graphics card needs it most, the modular design makes for a clean and simple build, and the lack of RGB aside, it looks really good.
