There’s always been something deeply fascinating to me about the Chornobyl setting—an entire city and its surrounding towns suddenly abandoned, frozen in time by the disaster. The eerie emptiness of that urban landscape has long captured my imagination. I’ve dreamed of seeing it firsthand, though I know that’s not likely. Thankfully, the STALKER series offers the next best thing—a chance to explore that haunting world from the safety of my room.

Developed and published by a Ukrainian studio, GSC Game World, based in the very country where the real-life disaster occurred, ‘STALKER: Legends of the Zone Trilogy’ brings together the first three entries in the series. It’s a great bundle that lets players either revisit these cult classics or experience them for the very first time.

‘Shadow of Chernobyl ’is the first entry in the series, where you play as the Marked One—a mysterious survivor suffering from amnesia. Tasked with tracking down a man named Strelok, you’re thrust into the heart of the Zone, where danger is found around every corner and secrets slowly begin to surface. Survival isn’t guaranteed, and every step forward unravels more of the Zone’s many mysteries.

‘Clear Sky’, the second game released in the series, serves as a prequel to the other two titles. This time, you play as Scar, a seasoned veteran well-acquainted with the Zone. Unlike the Marked One, Scar is definitely no stranger to its dangers, and his actions play a major role in shaping the outcome of the Faction Wars, a major conflict brewing beneath the surface.

The final entry in the trilogy, ‘Call of Pripyat’, follows Special Service agent Major Degtyarev as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of a military expedition deep within the Zone. Familiar threats return, but the game stands out for its rich storytelling and a cast of memorable characters that bring the zone to life.

Each game is tightly connected, though, gradually unravelling the mysteries behind the Zone through unexpected plot twists; some of which genuinely caught me off guard. The fates of the protagonists are deeply intertwined with the narrative, and your choices throughout the journey matter, often determining who lives, who dies, and what truths ultimately come to light.

Exploring the Zone will often prove deadly. Hunting for better gear usually means entering into dangerous territory, and I found myself saving often, sometimes even mid-gunfight, because one wrong move can get you killed in an instant. Whether it’s bandits, mutants, or rival Stalkers, danger is always around the corner, making every movement. Careful ammo management isn’t just smart, it’s essential for survival.

The gunplay is brutal and unforgiving, and the movement can feel clunky, but that’s part of the STALKER charm. The game is deliberately unpolished in a way that keeps you constantly on edge; every corner, doorway, or dark hallway feels like a potential ambush. Helping you stay one step ahead is your PDA; an indispensable tool that displays nearby enemies, your map and quest markers, and alerts for deadly anomalies and radiation.

Anomalies are scattered throughout the world, and it’s usually best to steer clear of them. But sometimes, avoiding them isn’t an option, especially when navigating tight spaces like narrow tunnels. In these moments, bolts become essential. Tossing one from your inventory can trigger an anomaly safely, revealing its presence and giving you a chance to slip through unharmed. It’s a simple mechanic that you will use quite often, so don’t be afraid to use it.

Radiation, on the other hand, is something you should avoid at all costs. Once exposed, it rapidly drains your health and will kill you quickly. Anti-radiation meds can cleanse the sickness and halt the damage, but you’ll still need to recover your lost health using food, bandages, or medkits scavenged throughout the Zone. Managing your condition becomes just as important as surviving a firefight; sometimes, they go hand in hand at the same time.

I strongly recommend looting everything you come across. Search the bodies of fallen bandits, uncover hidden stashes scattered throughout the Zone, and trade with locals and fellow Stalkers whenever you can. Resources are scarce, and staying stocked up is the only way to survive. Every bullet, medkit, and scrap of food counts; you’ll be glad, like I was, by taking the time to prepare; otherwise, you’re just making the game more difficult for yourself.

The only drawback is that these are straight ports, not remakes or full remasters. Aside from next-gen enhancements and mod support, the games remain largely unchanged from their original releases, meaning some lingering quality-of-life issues are still present.

In Shadow of Chernobyl, for example, a UI indicator for D-pad shortcuts that arrive in the later entries would have been helpful, and the inventory management system feels clunky and outdated by modern standards.

The art style remains largely untouched, but it still holds up really well. The gloomy, rain-soaked days still look fantastic and contribute immensely to the games’ brutal atmosphere. Abandoned factories and underground bunkers ooze tension, with their eerie silence and decaying interiors making every step feel dangerous. Despite their age, the visuals still do a great job of immersing you within the haunting wasteland that is the zone.

Fellow Stalkers gather around campfires to share stories and lore about the Zone, or unwind by playing guitar and singing. These moments add a heartfelt touch of charm and humanity, letting you take a load off from the harsh, unforgiving zone.

Overall, the Legends of the Zone trilogy is a great bundle and is the best way to experience the original trilogy. While the games haven’t been brought back into the modern era in every aspect, they still retain the same key ingredients, such as gritty charm, dark atmosphere, and tough survival mechanics, which is what made them cult classics in the first place. Whether you’re a newcomer to the Zone or a returning veteran, this bundle is a haunting, rewarding journey through one of the best post-apocalyptic settings you’ll find in any medium.
