Have you ever wondered what it’s like to strike gold in an abandoned storage unit? Storage Hunter Simulator puts you in the shoes of a bold bidder of storage auctions, where every locker could be hiding that hidden treasure or trash. Developed by Raccoons Studio and published by astragon Entertainment, this simulation challenges players to bid wisely, uncover hidden gems, and sell for maximum profit. With its mix of strategy, risk, and thrill of the unknown, can you rise to become the ultimate king or queen of storage auctions?

There was a curious mix of fun and frustration in Storage Hunter Simulator. It starts with a super slow start, and while getting a bank loan initially sounds great, it quickly becomes daunting once you realise you have to pay it back, and you don’t get a choice in how you pay it back. However, once you get into the game, it becomes rewarding and picks up a little. At its core, there’s a satisfying loop of exploring storage units, uncovering hidden treasures, and managing your finds, which becomes addictive.

The progression system encourages exploration and investment in upgrades, but repetitive tasks, coupled with awkward inventory management, can make those longer sessions feel tedious. You can earn reputation (RP) in different areas, but it feels more or less hollow, and it’s just a number on the screen. I would have liked a skill system for each map section, which you could expand on to give the game some depth, rather than buying and selling. Despite these flaws, the thrill of discovering rare items and building your collection keeps the gameplay engaging enough to warrant the experience.

I was disappointed with the sound design, which was inconsistent and often underwhelming. The environmental noises like creaking doors and clanging metal add some atmosphere to the vehicle, surprisingly central to the gameplay, sounded awful, with engine noises that felt flat, generic and completely unconvincing.

Moving and interacting with items also lacked satisfying audio feedback, making those actions feel weightless and unimpactful. The music, however, was surprisingly good, stream-friendly and fitting the game’s tone, though, like in many games, it became repetitive over time, and I ended up turning it off and starting up trusty old Spotify instead.

The controls in Storage Hunter Simulator are surprisingly solid in some areas, but super clunky in others. I was genuinely surprised at how well the vehicles handled, even though the steering was very stiff and responsive, which really suited the game. It was quite manageable driving around the storage lots and junk yards, and zipping through the streets. On foot, movement and basic interaction were mostly intuitive.

Still, moving items around felt awkward and cumbersome, as if the game had been designed for VR rather than mouse and keyboard, and I didn’t even bother plugging in your controller. Picking up and placing objects often required frustrating precision, which disrupted the flow of gameplay. Despite the minor issues, the driving controls and general movement were decent enough to keep the experience enjoyable.

It’s become the unwritten rule in these games that the graphics strike a balance between realism and arcade-style charm, creating a visually engaging environment for players. I was surprised by the detail put into the storage units, with their weathered metal doors and worn concrete floors, while the items inside, which ranged from everyday household goods to rare collectibles, were a little hit-and-miss in terms of texture.

The graphics’ overall style leans towards the stylised realism rather than the hyper-realistic graphics we are getting so used to. The vehicles seemed poorly textured, giving them a flat, almost generated appearance. Lighting and shadows added some depth to the environment. Yet, the character models and customisation options are a nightmare, with awkward proportions and stiff animations that break the small bit of immersion we sought.

Storage Hunter Simulator is part thrill and part frustration. It offers a genuinely addictive core loop of exploring storage units, uncovering hidden treasures, and managing your finds. The game’s slow start, clunky item management, and lack of meaningful progression through RP or a skill system can make sessions feel a little more tedious.
