The Drifter is a gritty, narrative-driven point-and-click adventure that plunges you into a suspenseful tale of murder, mystery and memory loss. Developed by Powerhoof, a talented two-man indie studio based in Melbourne, this game captures the essence of classic thrillers with a modern twist.

MKAU Gaming had the chance to check out the demo, and needless to say, I want more, and it did not disappoint. The Drifter looks like it will promise an unforgettable ride through the dark corners of the human psyche.

The demo features the first chapter, which introduces Mick Carter and his twisted journey and sets the bar for a suspenseful and intriguing storyline. Mick returns to his hometown for the first time in years, which starts an oddly disturbing chain of events. You witness a murder, secrets, and memories in the first chapter, which made me instantly want to see where the storyline goes.

The Drifter is one of those games where you can settle down in your chair and relax while playing an immersive experience. The developers have kept it true to the classic point-and-click adventure formula while ensuring a smooth and responsive experience.

To navigate or interact with anything, it’s as simple as clicking where you want to go or what you want to do, and if you need to use an item, you use your scroll wheel to select the item.

You don’t need to sit there scratching your head on which item, even though most of them are self-explanatory, but the item will get a small white highlight showing you that it needs to be used.  I hope to see some puzzles or something added to the full release.

I loved the audio in this game. From the eerie atmosphere to the synth-driven soundtrack that follows you around, to the absolute top-notch voice acting, the demo was wrapped in the perfect package. Mick has this deep raspy voice that is, funnily enough, Australian, so it made me love it that little bit more without being biased.

The characters you need to speak to or interact with all have emotions and sounds that make them feel like the news reporter had that well-spoken voice made for television, where Mick almost sounded defeated and was over life, but still kept pushing forward. The soundtrack just screamed classic thriller, which I was a huge fan of. The audio in this demo was a big key, and it pulled you further into the narrative.

The retro-inspired pixel art perfectly complements the gritty noir-inspired narrative. The visuals complement the story with the moody lighting, detailed environments, and character animations that draw you into the story and make you want more. The developers did a fantastic job painting the scenes with the environment and surrounding characters to immerse you into the story and continuously want more.

The user interface is clean and stays true to the classic point-and-click design, whilst putting a pinch of that modern style accessibility. I loved the attention to detail put into the graphics, and each scene didn’t just feel like another pixel art-style game, but something much more.

The Drifter Demo delivered a blend of mystery, suspense, and retro charm, which stands out in the indie adventure game scene compared to what the first chapter produced. Powerhoof has crafted an experience that will hook players in from the start and make them want more after the demo is finished.

The combination of atmospheric pixel art visuals, immersive audio design, and intuitive controls with the twisting narrative is bound to be a memorable experience.
