The Expanse – A Telltale Series (Episode 5/Series Conclusion) – Review

Finally, we come to the conclusion of ‘The Expanse’, a Telltale Series. Is it what we expected or is it something more? The 5th and final episode of The Expanse has finally come to end our space adventure. Beginning straight from where we left off in the previous episode, it leads you right into some action and a rather difficult decision but alas I believe I made the right decision.

Soon after starting, we find ourselves reuniting with old friends in the depths of space, and deciding whether to fight back or agree to some terms. The setting here will be quite familiar as you find yourself back on your ship. Exploring, you’ll get some insight into Drummers’ feelings on the events through the past episodes as you reflect on some of the decisions you made and people you might have lost.

Only taking 30 minutes to finish, I found this to be the shortest episode and quite disappointing in how things turned out. Naturally, some choices will extend the length, but not by a whole lot though. I do feel they could have gone a bit more in-depth with the conclusion as they just added in a time skip and left the general story on a bit of a cliffhanger. Whether or not this will lead to a sequel or not I’m not sure, however, this does make me want to check out the TV series even more.

Episode 5, brings things to a close but not in the greatest way in my opinion. I did enjoy getting the chance to reunite with my crew and reflect on what had happened. It felt almost rushed, however, and very short, using a time skip to advance a bit of time after the events and then ending on a cliffhanger didn’t leave me feeling satisfied.

Now that we’ve come to an end, I would like to reflect on the game as a whole. Throughout, I really enjoyed myself, learning about the main character Camina Drummer, was quite an adventure. Telltale does a fabulous job of telling a great story while allowing you to make most of the decisions.

The art style and sound design is the iconic Telltale style for the whole game, from the small bit of freedom to explore to the great cutscenes with Quick-Time-Events allowing you to feel in control the whole time. Along with a great cast of voice actors for the extensive dialogue, and more impressively having the actual voice actress from The Expanse TV series reprise her role as Camina Drummer.

In conclusion, The Expanse is a great and enjoyable experience for Telltale and Sci-Fi fans, offering a good amount of choices and replayability all in that iconic Telltale style. I had a good time playing, though I just wish the ending had a bit more substance to it as the conclusion did leave me unsatisfied right at the end of what was a great space adventure.
