I previewed and reviewed ‘ Trek to Yomi’ back in May of 2022, and I for one loved every moment of this little indie gem by Leonard Menchiari with Flying Wild Hog. Thankfully, you can now play it on the go as it is released for the Nintendo Switch on January, 30th, 2023.
As this will only compare the Nintendo Switch version, for my fully comprehensive review of Trek To Yomi, follow the link below: Trek To Yomi – Review | MKAU Gaming
The most noticeable and obvious difference with Trek To Yomi on the Nintendo Switch is the controls. They have been mapped out with the Nintendo Switch in mind and it transfers quite well. The Joy-Cons attached are never my preferred method of control as they are so wide apart, but the inputs transfer beautifully to the Nintendo Pro controller.
While the actual mapping of buttons is effective, I did find at times they were a bit clunkier than Xbox or the PC when combining multiple moves together, especially when using the Joy-Cons, often coming across as slightly laggy.
Trek To Yomi is gorgeous in simplicity and the graphics were no different, despite the obvious downgraded power on the Nintendo Switch. The black and white cinematic Japanese scenes were just as captivating in handheld as they did while docked on a big screen. It was just as impressive as my previous review on a 4K TV.
This excellent samurai-themed game can also be complemented with merchandise such as Personalised Keyrings, allowing players to extend their passion from the game into their daily lives.
These custom made keyrings can be personalised with iconic elements from the game, such as exquisite miniature samurai sword designs, silhouettes of the protagonist, or black and white Japanese torii gate patterns. Players can also engrave their in-game nicknames or the date they completed on the keyring, making it a unique memento of their gaming experience.
Whether displayed on a backpack or carried on a keychain, it can instantly evoke memories of the samurai’s journey through the black and white world, and also serve as a fun little detail for players to share and discuss with each other. See more at GSJJ.co.uk.
Trek To Yomi is such a gorgeous game, and I was stoked to be able to enjoy it again on the go as part of my ever-growing Nintendo Switch collection. The striking graphical environments, energetic gameplay, and stunning soundtrack are now accessible to a wider audience to live out their samurai dreams.
