Blizzard Entertainment is back with an early look at the upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion. Thanks to the team at Blizzard, I had the opportunity to explore the Alpha build, which showcased the new campaign, the highly anticipated housing system, and a range of fresh and reimagined features.

The second chapter of the three-part Worldsoul Saga, World of Warcraft: Midnight continues the multi-expansion storyline unveiled at BlizzCon 2023, which is designed both as a celebration of the franchise’s twenty-year legacy and as a foundation for Azeroth’s future.

Midnight picks up immediately after the War Within, following the fall of the Void Lord Dimensius. In the aftermath, the Harbinger of the Void, Xal’atath, claims the Dark Heart, now infused with Dimensius’ power. This ancient relic, which played a central role in the destruction of Dalaran and the rise of the Nerubians in Azj-Kahet in the previous instalment, becomes her weapon to ignite a new chapter in the war.

The campaign opens with Lady Liadrin’s call for aid at the Sunwell, where Xal’atath has launched her assault, unleashing a massive Void invasion – the first step in her plan to extinguish the Light itself.

The opening cinematic sets the stage as Liadrin and Lor’themar Theron lead Silvermoon’s desperate defence, joined on the front lines by several familiar allies rallying to protect Silvermoon City, Quel’Thalas, and Azeroth as a whole.

Silvermoon City has undergone a massive overhaul, offering a richer and more detailed hub compared to its 2007 counterpart. The reimagined city introduces several new districts, including Falconwing Square, home to the Farstriders; Thalassian University, which also serves as the site of a new delve; and Murder Row, a new dungeon, now positioned as a neutral space. With this also comes the reworked Eversong Woods, and the zone is breathtaking, offering a striking variety of moods and landscapes.

By merging the Ghostlands with Eversong Woods, it now feels on par with the larger zones of recent expansions. Although partially restored, the Ghostlands still retain the haunting qualities that make them unique from the brighter forests of Eversong.

Midnight also brings sweeping updates to classes and combat, with a streamlined system designed to be more approachable for players of all skill levels. Specialisations are being revamped to make tracking buffs and debuffs easier and to create a more straightforward path toward mastery. Alongside these changes, the level cap is being raised to 90, and upcoming changes will expand on pre-existing specialisation trees and powerful new Apex Talents to further enhance character progression.

A new allied race, the Haranir, has also been introduced, though not immediately playable. First encountered in The War Within, players will have the opportunity to uncover the history, culture, and mysteries of these beings. Over the course of the campaign, these discoveries will eventually lead to the Haranir becoming a fully recruitable allied race. When unlocked, Haranir characters will be able to choose from the following classes: Hunter, Druid, Mage, Monk, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior.

Expanding on character creation, the Demon Hunter class also received some love with a third specialisation: the Devourer, a mid-range style that channels Void magic and introduces unique mechanics shaped by both specialisation and Hero Talents. Alongside this addition, Void Elves are now able to embrace the path of the Demon Hunter, taking up the mantle to stand against the ever-hungry forces of the Void.

The world of Midnight opens up with a wide range of fresh content. Players will work with four new and distinct Silvermoon factions, building reputation to unlock exclusive cosmetic rewards. Adding another layer of gameplay, the new Prey system allows adventurers to take on open-world hunts for formidable targets that drop unique cosmetics and mounts, with scalable challenges across Normal, Hard, and Nightmare modes.

To help players navigate this wealth of activities, Blizzard is introducing the Journeys Tab, a new feature in the Adventure Guide that unifies progression tracking for Renown, Delves, Prey hunts, and even Great Vault rewards into one convenient hub.

This addition is built to support both dedicated completionists and casual players alike, making goals more intuitive to follow. Alongside it comes a major UI overhaul, with nameplates, damage meters, boss alerts, a new cooldown manager, and numerous other valuable resources being integrated directly into the game’s interface. With server-side tracking enhancing accuracy, Blizzard aims to reduce reliance on third-party add-ons and mods while providing a cleaner, more accessible experience out of the box.

Group content in Midnight is also expanding significantly. Players can look forward to 10 new Delves plus a rotating Nemesis Delve, each offering new rewards and encounters. Long time adventuring partner Brann Bronzebeard steps away, making room for Valeera Sanguinar, the Blood Elf Rogue who can fill any role (DPS, Tank, or Healer) depending on the group’s needs.

Endgame content deepens with 8 new dungeons and 3 raids available at launch, each rich with story and unique environments. On the PvP side, the highlight is Slayer’s Rise. This massive 40v40 battleground pits two armies against each other, beginning on opposite ends of the map before erupting into an all-out clash for dominance in the centre.

We also had the chance to explore a pair of new dungeons. Murder Row is a shorter, maze-like instance with heavy Legion-inspired theming, featuring a quirky tavern disguise event that adds both flavour and challenge. Windrunner Spire, on the other hand, showcases the spirit of Lirath Windrunner, alongside a more straightforward layout, breathtaking visuals, and meaningful story moments. Both dungeons are rich in atmosphere and exploration, and I’m excited to see what else Blizzard has in store on this front with the new expansion.

Player housing, one of the most requested features, is also finally coming to World of Warcraft. Players will first have access to Razorfen Shores, a massive public neighbourhood featuring eight flight points and expansive shared spaces. Also available will be Guild neighbourhoods, which will scale to roster size, ensuring everyone has a room. At the same time, cross-faction housing allows guild members to claim homes together, regardless of their allegiance.

Although districts maintain Horde or Alliance themes for exteriors, interiors are fully customisable with no faction restrictions, giving players creative freedom inside their homes. Pre-purchasers of Midnight will have the first access and choice of housing plots. However, all players will still have fair access to secure housing alongside friends and guildmates.

This first deep dive into World of Warcraft: Midnight left me thoroughly impressed and even more eager for its 2026 release. The War Within, the previous chapter, proved to be an excellent entry point for both new and returning players. I’m confident that Midnight will refine and expand on anything the first instalment of the Worldsoul Saga may have left behind. My expectations for this expansion couldn’t be higher, with Blizzard really pulling out a lot of punches for this release.
