Dread Templar (Early Access) – Preview

Shoot through everything in sight as you stomp your way through the dark and gloomy areas of Hell that you, The Dread Templar, have been banished to. The one thing on your mind is revenge, and in order to attain it, you must work your way through the levels of hell and blast every demon along your way!

Dread Templar is an action-packed, super fast-paced retro shooter developed by T19 games and published by 1C Entertainment. The game is still in early access and is set to be released on 14th August on PC.

If you love retro shooters, like Quake, Unreal Tournament, Duke Nukem, and Doom to name a few, you will love Dread Templar. Based on these similar games the action is extremely fast, gunplay is super smooth, and graphics are in direct homage to the legends of speedy FPS games. With low poly graphics, retro-styled pixelated scenery, and epic level designs, it’ll feel like you are in the 90s killing demonic scum for fun.

The game doesn’t really have any story to it, and honestly, it doesn’t really need one. There is a quick tutorial to show you the ropes then it’s straight in the deep end. Shoot everything in sight, find the secrets, load the next level. Backed with an amazingly heavy/industrial soundtrack, killing demons in the catacombs of Satan’s playground has never been more fun.

There are 10 main categories of weapons ranging from twin katanas, which can be combined and thrown at enemies, to akimbo pistols, shotguns, akimbo SMGs, and weapons taken straight out of Satan’s armory.

On your journey, you will find blood gems and perks that you can use to level up the Dread Templars weapon abilities and further improve your combat prowess. The game features dodging, like most of the retro-inspired FPS games, but also bullet-time to slow down time, land those headshots, and watch your enemies explode into a bloody mist from a couple of shotgun blasts to the head.

The developers have a big road plan as well, with introductions of new weapons, bosses, levels, skills, quests, and a wave-based tower defense mode. Playing and reading about this amazing little indie game shows that it could be a hidden gem and one of the better retro-inspired FPS games.
