Fallout 76 was a highly anticipated game originally released in 2018 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It was initially panned by critics and fans, but Bethesda has since redeemed itself with various patch updates and DLC. Now in 2026, Update 66, titled “The Backwoods”, is available for free for players to get back in their Vault Suits for a new adventure. We were fortunate to get an early preview of some of the team at Bethesda and see what’s in store for the latest update of Fallout 76.

The team showed us demonstrations of two public events, both held at a rundown Wild West themed park. They first played through an old public event, the Moonshine Jamboree, to show what’s new and what’s changed. This event now has a reduced playtime and doesn’t take as long as before, based on player feedback that it tended to drag on longer than it needed to. Players will battle uninvited guests, and the enemy AI has been improved for an even more challenging experience.

When we thought this event was over, Bigfoot suddenly appeared. Bigfoot is a 4-star legendary enemy, a DPS race, with a large amount of health and deals heavy damage. Players will also only have 5 minutes to defeat him from the moment he spawns, and while he may not appear every time, it’s still important for players to be prepared for him in case he does appear.

After Bigfoot is defeated, he won’t appear again for an hour minimum, but after that hour has passed, players will be anticipating his next arrival, and there’s no telling when that could be. Bigfoot could appear at the end of various public events and keep players on their toes when they think everything is calm and they can move on. Bigfoot, a 4-star legendary enemy, means players can earn 4-star rewards if they succeed in taking him down.

The next public event shown was Most Wanted, which was mostly similar to the previous event but had its own surprises. The team also explained some changes and updates, such as reducing the number of buckeroos needed from 600 to 500 and improving the amount of loot received.

During this event, standard robot enemies appeared, the Sheriff boss appeared at the end, and a surprise 3-star enemy, the Storm Goliath, also appeared, which the team managed to take down. It was also mentioned that 3-star enemies will always give out two 2-star rewards.

The team also explained that various older events will be updated and now have a determined number of legendary enemies. The rewards have also been touched up and are now more meaningful, such as XP relevant to your player level (higher level means more XP), and the amount of caps you get has been increased. Rewards that weren’t meaningful to players have been removed.

During a Q&A, the team also mentioned that the enemy spawn rate now varies, possibly around once every hour. Bigfoot is a guaranteed 4-star legendary, and the gameplay is now more balanced for players of different skill levels based on their rank. The enemies are designed to keep surprising players and keep them in anticipation. There are currently no updates to fishing, but they plan to add new recipes for the fish you catch in a future update. Other questions were asked, but many topics cannot be discussed at this time; players can see for themselves now that the update is available.

Update 66 “The Backwoods”, is shaping up to be another big and exciting update. Bigfoot is an intimidating enemy who has players anticipating his arrival every time they successfully complete an event, but he offers great rewards for those who manage to take him down.

Fallout 76 may have received harsh criticism when it was first released, but it has since received various quality-of-life updates that improved various aspects, and the updates in this latest DLC will certainly please longtime fans. Update 66 “The Backwoods”, is a free update that will no doubt have players gearing up again in their Vault Suits.
