Greedfall: Gold Edition (Xbox Series X) – Review

Greedfall, developed by Spiders, is one of the most underrated RPGs of 2019. It had such a weird and unique story wrapped around some beautiful eclectic visuals. This year they deliver ‘Greedfall: Gold Edition’ with a new DLC expansion packed neatly inside to continue the adventures.

Players of this version can also expect an upgrade for Xbox Series X|S & Playstation 5 with 4K resolution compatibility for improved graphics, faster loading times, and 60 FPS for that ultimate performance, not that I ever had an issue before. More exciting is the inclusion of the expansion, ‘The De Vespe Conspiracy’, which also can be bought separately on Xbox, Playstation, and PC.

Now, since the game is an RPG, you can’t just jump into this DLC without reaching a certain point in the original campaign. If you have at least finished the “Searching for Constantin” and the “On The High king’s Trail” you can trigger this expansive new tale via the many campsites you would have unlocked by then in the form of a glowing note.

Might I add, this new direction in the overall narrative provides literally hours of extra content and dialogue, which is very impressive. The tale kicks off when a new rival family, The De Vespes, lands on the island, Teer Fradee. This family is notoriously cut-throat and ruthless and will stop at nothing to take power from those they challenge.

Clashing with the natives of the land, a saucy sudden marriage, diplomatic corruption and a plethora of problems arrive with them. Our poor hero, De Sardet, must restore her family’s honour and save the people from the ensuing tyranny of the De Vespe family.

The controls play just as they do through the campaign, with the same move sets and skills. This time around though there are new weapons added. This is all fine and well but much like the base game, the new enemies are overused and the new weapons often get sold off due to the small turn around of generally much better loot.

I will say though, the graphics and audio are still top-notch. The visual enhancement for the Xbox Series X means crisp and clear animations and cutscenes. While the new environments in Greedfall: Gold Edition are beautiful to look at, they are still quite empty once you peel back the beauty.

The music though is still quite atmospheric and the battle tunes are folky and rustic in style. The music definitely adds to the charm of the story.

Overall, Greedfall: Gold Edition is a tidy little bundle of improvements and DLC. The added “The De Vespe Conspiracy” story is a meaty chunk of extra content, and the next-gen enhancements really round out the experience. While some extras fall a bit way side, if you are a fan of Greedfall in general, you will feel right at home.
