No Place Like Home (Early Access) – Preview

Return to the place where you grew up, meet old friends and make new ones along the way as you journey to clean up the world humanity trashed and left behind. Bring back the beauty of the land you once called home, because there is “No Place Like Home”.

Developed by Chicken Launcher, No Place Like Home is a post-apocalyptic farming game, set after humanity trashed the Earth and left for Mars, leaving only a few people behind. Now your mission is to clean up this world and restore the beauty that was once the Earth. Equipped with your trusty vacuum and drill, start clearing out the trash left behind by humanity, cleaning up the land, and finding useful resources. Before you know it, you have found the old house you grew up in, and outside you find a strange chicken, Sir Cornelius. He’ll start you on your quest to restore and rebuild your village, as well as the world around you.

Farming is essential to your progress and survival. By clearing out trash you find seeds and other useful resources to start restoring your farm, allowing you to grow crops, food, and domesticate the animals. Everything you farm and find along the way is useful in this new economy, a lot of which is used for trading to unlock new recipes for better equipment and structures better suited for your animals. It’s not all about being serious, cleaning up, and surviving though. Have some fun with the animals you’ve domesticated, put funny hats on them, and have a party with them. Animals have feelings too and need some enjoyment in their life.

Being in control of the character the whole time, you would like things to be smooth, and most of the time this was the case, but when it came to placing dirt and seeds, or even some structures for your farm, it was very easy to misplace. Thankfully, there’s always the option to pick it up and try again.

The game world is a beautiful place, and it’s a shame humanity takes no care most of the time. Battle your way through trash and foes, and restore the beauty to the few biomes the game has to offer, from snow to desert and what’s in between. The trash can be quite satisfying to clean up, but it sometimes felt like there was too much, becoming tedious to clean it all up, but I couldn’t help but want to get rid of it all.

All while being aesthetically pleasing, the soundtrack and sounds also matched up nicely. The sound of drilling and sucking up the trash was so satisfying, and the soothing but also slightly upbeat soundtrack kept me going.

An enjoyable journey with a reasonably big world to explore, sidequests to keep you entertained, and the enjoyment of building your ideal post-apocalyptic farm, which, who knows, might even entice humanity to return to the once beautiful Earth.
