Ready or Not’s latest expansion, Boiling Point, has arrived at a time when the tactical shooter space continues to evolve, pushing you into deeper, more tense, methodical encounters that demand that you are locked in, composed and ready to kick down doors.

Developed and published by VOID Interactive, the DLC builds on the studio’s commitment to grounded, SWAT-style realism, expanding the scale and intensity of the scenarios players must navigate. We are going to take a look at what Boiling Point brings to the table, how it fits into the broader experience, and whether it’s successful in adding meaningful depth to the game. We have covered the base game, which you can read (here), which will provide you with some more context on core mechanics and systems as the game is growing.

I’ll quickly cover the plot again. The game Ready or Not is set in the fictional city of Los Sueños, where escalating crime, organised networks and unstable individuals have pushed law enforcement to its limits. You step into the role of a SWAT commander leading a highly trained unit tasked with responding to these high-risk incidents, which include anything from hostage situations, active shooters, drug raids and barricaded suspects, which creates some good fun.

The Boiling Point DLC continues this setting, with the relentlessly debased city of Los Sueños facing an existential crisis when a subversive terror attack severs any remaining faith in what became an ineffective and overwhelmingly militarised government.

Ready or Not: Boiling Point builds on the core gameplay loop we have all learned in the base game by placing us into a city that feels unstable, and behind every door could be someone waiting, the aftermath of the mass shooting at the Los Sueños pier has sparked widespread unrest and riots, while the presence and actions of the faction Mariposa Lily Organisation (MLO) have become quite visible as there working to destablise the city.

I was quite impressed with the new “Quick Play” function, which lets you bypass going to the Police station, saving time overall and letting you jump straight into the missions with your loadout pre-picked, so you can deploy faster and get into the action.

Boiling Point also expands how you can interact a little more, moving beyond simple lore-based interactions into decisions that can influence gameplay. Certain interactables, like in the mission “No Good Deed and A New America”, allow you to unlock secret areas, which will alter how you progress, which can also provide things like tactical advantages, which encourage people not to speed run but to take the time to really search every corner of the mission.

These elements are not all straightforward; some require environmental puzzles, such as observing or experimenting, rather than simply seeing the answer and sending it.

With all good DLCs comes new content and the developers have not forgotten about us the DLC introduces new weapons to the SWAT armoury which is available to all players regardless if you own the DLC or not but these weapons include the G18-C pistol with full auto capability, the S2011-P pistol, the RTWC-6.5 battle rifle along with some new attachments such as an RMO sight with 3x magnification, multi function rail attachments which allows you to combine laster, IR and the flashlight.

If you own the DLC, you will also get access to new headgear which is an ADV headset, tactical beanie and cap, the bone conduction headset, the tactical rebreather gasmask, the ‘Artemis’ heavy tactical vest, Machinez fingerless gloves, and four DLC exclusive tattoos offering further personalisation of your operator.

Ready or Not continues to prioritise realism, and Boiling Point has maintained that philosophy with the in-game simulation tactical realism. VOID Interactives consults with real-world police units, and it’s reflected well in the game with small things like ballistic penetration, ricochet, limb-specific damage and armour mechanics. Combined with the existing scoring system, these elements reinforce the methodical, high-stakes nature of this game.

  • The DLC feels like a meaningful addition
  • Environmental interactions are a huge upgrade
  • Realism is top tier
  • Quick play is a great addition

The Bad

  • Could feel punishing for casual players
  • The story wasn’t highly impactful, but it was sufficient
