Zombie Rollerz: Pinball Heroes – Review

Zombie Rollerz: Pinball Heroes is a tower defence pinball game, created by Zing Games Inc and Developed by Firefly Games Inc. There are hero characters to unlock, with the default character being Burnjamin, a knight who wears dragon armour. There are 10 different heroes to unlock and play, each with its own special ability.

The game’s main playstyle is pinball, but you are defending your ballista from waves of zombies. You start the turn by launching a rock into the play zone and will have flippers to cause as much mayhem as possible on the zombies. On the field, there will be items to hit that will help the player out such, as barrels that will explode, fire pits that will spew fire out for a few seconds, and switches that will activate traps or close off pathways, channeling the zombies in specific ways.

There is a range of different boss fights that have their own unique traits, and they will have you thinking about where to strike first instead of flipper spamming. The game also has a slight rogue-like element about it, and as you explore the overworld map in between fights, it is randomly generated to ensure that each playthrough offers a new experience.

As you progress across the overworld, a zombie plague “goo” is close behind, so the objective is to find the level exit and defeat the boss. Only then will you be able to move onto the next world, and there are 4 worlds in total to battle across.

Visually the game is sharp and colourful, and while the worlds are easy to look at, it’d be handy if you could change the outlining colour of the ball – it is very easy to lose when there is a lot of chaos on screen.

The music for the game starts off at a decent pace, but as the level gets harder with more zombies spawning, it speeds up to reflect the tension there is on the field. It is hard to describe it, but it reminds me a lot of Overcooked and how the music in that went.

The controls are easy to pick up and there is a nice HUD that will show you what button is for each skill so you will never forget, and the initial shot to fire your ball is just an easy click and drag command.

In conclusion, keeping in mind that this has been a phone game before making the port to PC, it has done a good job. If you’re a fan of pinball games, I would strongly suggest giving it a shot, with its unique blend of Pinball and tower defence – something I didn’t think I would enjoy as much as I did. As a whole, I found it a bit on the easy side.

The boss fights were fun but didn’t offer much of a challenge, the characters have a decent-sized health bar, but it is way too easy to feel god-like when nothing can get you below the halfway mark, let alone close to you. Other than finding it easy, Zombie Rollerz: Pinball Heroes is a fun game to play, but I would only play it for small sittings, otherwise it can start to get repetitive.
