Everlasting Guilt (Early Access) – Review

Made by Geeky Mouse, Everlasting Guilt is a new indie FPS game that is fast-paced, focuses heavily on boss encounters, and is on early access on Steam.

As you first load into Everlasting Guilt, you will find yourself in a room with an enemy as it plays out teaching you how to block, dodge and attack so starting strong with training is always a plus in my books. The player starts off with an assault rifle as the main source of damage output, but other weapons can be unlocked at later stages, which can be swapped out to change how future fights will happen.

You are also equipped with a katana which has the ability to parry projectile attacks and will open up to being an extra ranged attack as you can fire a trio of blade projectiles with a swipe. As you finish the training section of the game you are dropped into an open valley with a less than populated area to explore. With no stamina drain, you are able to sprint around to your heart’s content. You will come across giant doors with a glowing orange orb, and shooting these will transport you to that level.

The level designs are quite an interesting mix. Changing from a factory to something that resembles a citadel, then back to a factory, the designs don’t blend that well in terms of progressing in a certain area. They feel mixed and out of place, but in saying that, the details of the levels themselves are a great touch. I just wish that they followed a theme instead of a blend of different environments.

In terms of the story, there was a quick sum up before being thrown into training. You are searching for seals that were taken, hence the heavy boss focus as mentioned above. Each boss will be the holder of a seal.

The enemy designs felt very familiar to other games. They feel like they’ve just been adjusted slightly to not feel copied and pasted. I’m mainly looking at the demon with the axe. Just add a shield and it would’ve been straight out of DOOM. I found when enemies were spawning the game’s framerates would drop and lag up pretty badly, to the point in some encounters I would be dead well before the lag settled between spawning enemies in and the projectile attacks.

There is a lot of stuff happening at once, which is where I think that issue comes from, but it is still in early access so here’s to hoping that gets addressed and fixed. Everlasting Guilt has a basic FPS control layout on the keyboard, but not being able to reload my gun will always confuse me. It also features full controller support, and this translates fairly well, as the buttons that are default assigned are a perfect choice for them.

As you enter combat there is a badass track that drops, again reminding me of DOOM, so for big fights, the backing track will keep you in the zone of shooting and blasting the demon scum that is in your way. Other than the sound of combat and the music while in combat, the game does lack audio tracking. Sure there is sound when shooting, but unless there is something happening on screen the audio feels quite dull and empty.

Everlasting Guilt is a promising game that has some great combat and challenging encounters. This is a game I will keep coming back to as the project is updated while in early access. The issue I had with the frame rate may have been my PC having a fit, but I will still recommend this title for fans of the DOOM series that love fast-paced action.
